i am thinking of adding a cd player to my desktop system for times when i want to listen without the pc fans wurring in the background.
for flexibility i want to be able to use it as a dac from my pc too.
have in the past looked at the cambridge range but not sure about the mixed reviews.
my latest interest is the audiolab 8200cd or cdq, £730 and £950 respectively.
these units use a sabre dac, which seems popular on head-fi etc.
anyone on here got any suggestions or advice?
thanks
simon

Hi Simon I would recommend the 840C if it's discounted again to £500, especially if you have the skills to swap out parts in the power supplies. Otherwise get a demo of an 8200CD, I thought it was very good indeed and I expect the 8200CDQ is of the same calibre. Jon

I am not trying to discourage you from buying a good CD player, just open your eyes to the fact that its simple to buy and configure a fan less mini PC today. You can get one that is half the size of the Solo UL, throw in a nice SSD and it´s absolutely silent unlike a CD player. Network it and have it fetch the audio from your desktop or server, if you want to save money on the SSD. Never heard of that Meier DAC, looks cool. How would you characterize it´s sound?
