Good morning, what are the cork mats that are placed over the turntable platter for? Would I benefit from putting it on top of my VPI Scout with the acrylic plate? Thank you.

They are just another mat material and an alternative to other materials like rubber, felt, or hard plastic, etc. Depending on the specific turntable the manufacturer may have a specific philosophy or recommendation as to what mat was designed to be used with their turntable. Home hobbyists and DIYers often experiment with mats, though they are unlikely to make a massive improvement in sound. If you use a thinner or thicker mat, you *may* want to adjust your arm height/vta in order to compensate for it.
