We are all told to keep our Hi-Fi equipment switched on to give its best sound and up till now that has been the best thing to do. However with the advent of switched mode PSU is this still the best idea?
Now thankfully I dont have any switch mode psu's on my Hi-Fi and my PSU1 works wonders! I have never had a problem with an old fassioned wire wound psu, they appear to go on forever (which is nice!). However recently i have purchased a couple of printers with the new style of PSU for use at work. These have been left on constantly since they where purchased about 6 months ago. I needed to move a printer so I unplugged the PSU, left it over night (had to go tot he pub!) then this morning I plugged it in and nothing.....dead. I have checked the mains cable etc and everything else works. The only thing i can think is some sort of thermal shock killing a component in the PSU? Oh and this is the third time this has happened with different manufatures of PSU. Are we working ourselves into bigger problems? with noisy, mains poluting power suplies that are prone to dying if switched off? Any one else care to comment? |

Hi Andy, I have no specific technical expertise nor any have I yet found any more information on the phenomenon to which you refer. I have however, had 3 such similar incidents with defunct SMPS, units in question had been powering various computer peripherals and in a major re-organisation, a number were turned off whilst functioning happily, repositioned and refused to come back to life after having been turned off, no amount of leaving them for a period to cool or reset made any difference and all 3 had to be replaced, most aggravating. I too have become rather suspicious of them following those incidents. |

I do not have technical expertise, however I have a few switching psu and no problem. I plug and unplug them as needed. I guess I have been lucky.

Another one bites the dust, less than 2 years old, powering my gigabit switch one minute, network down the next. Put the DMM on the output, down to 2.1 volts instead of the 5 it should be. More crap foisted on us in the name of environmental protection to go along with "gloom bulbs" and aerosols that deposit flyspray on anything within 5 feet due to inadequate propellants with the phase out of CFC's. Now our brilliant politicians are off to sell off the electricity generation stations before they have to spend up on environmental controls, after raising prices 35% in the last 2 years and selling off virtually all major road infrastructure to toll road operators. Nothing much seems to have changed here since the days of the "Rum Corps". |

"Sometimes I can't help the feeling that I'm
Living a life of illusion And oh, why can't we let it be And see thru the hole in this wall of confusion I just can't help the feeling I'm Living a life of illusion Pow, right between the eyes Oh, how nature loves her little surprises Wow, it all seems so logical now It's just one of her better disguises And it comes with no warning Nature loves her little surprises Continual crisis Hey, don't you know it's a waste of your day Caught up in endless solutions That have no meaning, just another hunch Based upon jumping conclusions Caught up in endless solutions Backed up against a wall of confusion Living a life of illusion" Joe Walsh |
