I think the auto button is light grey. If the fault only happens when it is in I would focus on the sample and hold circuit that switches the relay and speaker on when a music signal comes in. That circuit is bypassed when the switch is out, pointing to a power supply issue.

Is the grey button the switch, the led used to glow, then when triggered, went bright, now it's not on at all, so I will try to trace the circuit and check for dry joints, hopefully this may be the crackling problem too. Thank you for the advice.

Yes, the push button switch enables the auto on/off circuit. The solder joints in that area are a good starting point.
