Technically, I'd say Four Brothers is the killer Man-Tran number. I think Operator's my favourite of their 'ensemble' numbers, and lightweight though the song is, I do like Scotch and Soda (in music; in real life I take scotch wit ha drop of springwater).
Earlier mention of the Temps prompts me to mention that they were recorded by George Martin, as were The Alberts, who, if you don't know them, placed a lot more emphasis on performance than musical ability. They were also tied up with the Goons in various odd ways. The CD "By Jingo! It's British Rubbish" has selections from the Temps, The Bonzos and The Alberts, all bands that emerged from art college Dada movements and Trad Jazz. My copy was the only CD I had in my car for years; never unwelcome, often strangely comforting and always requested by my young son, who loved the Bonzos' Hunting Tigers song. Not strictly Jazz, but then again, not strictly anything ...

With regard to 'Birdland', the 'best' version that I have, is on the 'Elektra Musician' label, which has Manhattan Transfer accompanied by Weather Report, which was recorded 'live' at the 'Playboy Jazz Festival' in 1982.
Side 3 of the double LP set also includes some stunning songs by Nancy Wilson.
