Recently I got a pair of Sony's noise cancelling headphones, the hx1000. I had decided to replace my aging in-ear headphone (X10i) as they are starting to fall apart and the background noise on trains is often louder than my preferred listening level. I had some active noise cancelling headphones in the noughties and wondered if that would help, assuming the sound quality had progressed since then.

The Sony headphones are compact and comfortable. I experimented with the built-in EQ and was very pleased with the clarity of the sound, especially with noise cancellation on my recent long train journeys. I am used to cabled hifi headphones so having Bluetooth is weird. In my tests at home I was able to walk around the house and keep listening.

I have seen a number of people with portable over ear phones like these and now see and hear why. After an initial audition I gave my new phones several hours of music to warm them up then played a variety of material and was impressed. On the train I listened to an Adrian Boult boxset and enjoyed the full range  delivery of the music at more sensible levels. The train noise was reduced to low levels like the conversations (quiet coach?) so the intermittent sound reminded me what I wasn't missing. The gesture control on the right headshell for pause, track skip and scan, volume changes is very handy.

I bought them at my local Richer Sounds with a discount.

BT noise cancellers are just too convenient when you’re on the move. Trains, planes and mowing the lawn, almost become a pleasure.

Had a pair on Bose Quite Comfort 35’s for years, still really pleased with them. Do they sound as good a Bitzy with Sennheiser IE600’s? No, but moving around with wires wears thin after a while.
There are 10 kinds of people. Those who understand binary and those who don't.

Agreed Ernie. The noise cancellation was the deal maker for me. The shop let me pop out so I could see how the phones handled the traffic noise. Very effectively as it turned out and it was the same on the Azuma service to Kings Cross, train and passenger noise reduced so I could enjoy my music at lower levels.
