Is the difference in sound between a 1000 Euro and 3000 Euro cartridge big enough to justify spending the extra 2000 Euros for the "better" cartridge?

My answer is no. What say ye? Unless you are a fanatical audiophile who is only satisfied by the hyper-expensive (like I used to be) I believe most 1000 Euro cartridges should satisfy most people. Even if the 3000 Euro cartridge is really better, it will be a subtle difference most people will be incapable of detecting, and it will surely not be a difference worth paying 2000 Euros extra for. Audiophiles with 50,000 Euro systems will of course disagree...

Let's hear your thoughts on this matter.

a large part of HiFi is the pride of ownership  and spending a small fortune on a small ,very fragile and at the end of the day disposeable item ,as a cartridge is ,becomes the make or break of a system . More than any other compenent in the system, the cartridge must be the "must be better if i spend  a few (!!)quid more item.
i have gone large £3500 on a Koetsu  and had my beloved FR retipped at great expense a couple of times ,but have now decided to go down market  ,into the sub £500 pound bracket ,less flying cuff ,flapping sleeve angst ridden area ,and i must admit once the "bling"factor is out of the way i have not suffered at all.
does £3000 worth sound better than £300,with the right gear yes
does worrying that the next cheap album is going to muller the stylus of your pride and joy no
can i sit and listen to all my old  shte vinyl whilst under the influence whithout a £1000 pound rebuild bill as apposed to  a lot less if the inevitable should happen  .
still enjoying despite downpricing  just as pleasurable les stressfull  sod the gear we are here to listen to he music and just gettin back into MM cartridges(cheaper you know)Wink

So I think it is safe to conclude it is not wise to spend more than 1000 Euros on something as small and fragile as a phonograph cartridge that will sooner or later wear out. And the higher up you go in price, the more you pay for increasingly minimal improvements. Diminishing returns are a fact of life with expensive HiFi.
