I’m about to take delivery of a Garrard 401 with a SME3009 mk2 I already have my accession mc, which atm I’m using a Denon 301 mk2 mc cartridge on my current Technics SL1100 turntable. I’ve been told that the SME is not a good fit for the Denon.? I’m really keen to use the Accession with the Garrard. So my question is how do I move forward? Change the SME? Or a different mc cartridge or can the Accession be tweaked?

Appreciate the forum thoughts 😁

Did they give a reason for it not being a good fit? I have not owned that arm/cart combo but looking at the cartridge compliance a 3009 series Ii would probably be fine but the lower mass arm of the series ii improved might raise the resonant frequency a bit too high. Which version of the series ii is it please?

The series ii improved has a small pulley for the antiskate thread, instead of a small wire loop.

I have an early one here, which just has the wire loop.
It was bought brand new by the gentleman who passed it on to me.
Mine is a fixed headshell version, and it works best with carts at the higher end of the compliance range.

The removable headshell version is better suited to medium compliance carts, but with a touch of mass loading at the headshell end play nice with lower compliance carts.

Thanks Chris. If memory serves the early version has an effective mass of 12.5g whereas the improved is 6.5g. Your points about the headshell and mass sound to me

My SME has the loop and wire with the small weight for antiskate, which I presume is Mk2 non improved?
