Hope this is the right place for this question. Just set up dBpoweramp and following the instructions until I got to Configuring Secure Ripping. I didn't do any of the advanced stuff about C2 error pointers (or getting a scratched old CD etc). And somewhere there was also something about putting undue strain / stress on the CD drive. So I opted for non secure ripping.
As I said in another post elsewhere on this site, I was in the middle of listening to the ripped files (FLAC) with Foobar + Voyager, when my Sennheiser cable packed in, so I haven't got a complete verdict, but the first half of the first movement of the Prokofiev violin concerto sounded terrific. In other words, I don't know if my pc supports the C2 stuff (above) -- it likely doesn't, I suppose. But do I need it? Thanks for suggestions. Brian |

Secure ripping means that the data is verified - the data has been read identically on at least two reads.
A CD player will perform something called interpolation (make up the data by using predictive clues) if it has difficulty reading a disc, whereas a computer will not. If you securely rip a CD in dbPoweramp you will also access online databases which contain verification scores that indicate whether your rip is identical to rips performed by other users machines - a high score means that more rips have identical results. |

Good point Brian and Chris. I rely upon this feature of dBPoweramp and send my anonymous data in to help others, as I am sure you do/will.

I submitted my results last time I ripped something(about 10 days ago as it happens).
On top of that I had to write all the tags myself, cos the CD in question is not exactly mainstream, and has not been distributed widely by the majors. The CD was bought from the artist's web shop. ![]() Edited by Chris Firth - 14 Sep 2013 at 9:14pm |

Thanks both for those. I didn't explain myself very well, because I did actually click the 'Secure', and got a message in the popup box saying that the CD had been recognised and other users' rips / records had been found / compared.
What I meant was 'Ultra Secure Ripping', also 'Read into Lead-in or Lead-out'. I understand the points about comparing with other users' results and verifying that way, and it sounds a great idea. I was going to submit my own reading but see they prefer submissions only every 30 days or so, not sooner. Brian |

I use Max for ripping on my Mac. It has a feature using "CD Paranoia" for those wanting ultimate rips. Very appropriate name I thought . .

I found this primer in anticipation of giving dbpoweramp a try:
