Hi all. Just wondered how many of you out there feed their TVs through their main system/speakers?
Assuming tv has audio output a simple and cheap method of extracting (sometimes!) great sound with a suitable length of interconnect. My cable is home made screened cable but at some point will upgrade this. A lot of new modern programmes can produce excellent sound clean well balanced with huge soundstage and very deep bass when present. Recently inserted relatively budget mains cable which has cleaned up the mid range making it more open cleaner through the range. Never been keen on sounbars etc but great for everything for things from Star Wars to Dr Who, Coronation Street To Horizon. Cost will depend on quality of the cable and how far the TVs is from the amp. |

Most TVs nowadays have Toslink outputs, and I have a Toslink connection betwixt the TV and my DAC.
The TV acts as a hub for all of the kit connected to it (the TV has 4 HDMI connections) so that's 4 pieces of kit with the capability of being played through the audio rig. The main advantage of using the TV as a hub and the last link before the DAC is that there's no group delay, and therefore no speech/image synchronisation problems. Who needs multichannel? |

Sorry Chris old school I am afraid no DAC! No problems with delays in that I can have to sound and audio at same time with no time delay but maybe just lucky with my Panasonic!

I use Lautus phono from the back of my Sky+ box into my amp and the sound is on a totally different level to that coming from the TV - as you would expect. I find this more than good enough for general viewing & definitely enhances anything with music content. I have also tried Toslink into my DAC but I don't recall any huge improvement over the above. DAC is in the bedroom system now.
Main issue for me is often the sound balance in movies, recessed dialogue & overexaggerated sound effects I find annoying. Maybe multichannel would sort that but I got rid of my AV set up years ago. I rarely have the patience to sit through a film anyway. |

This was how I was running my TV, using Toslink also means easier to hide under the carpet if DAC is further away and run longer lengths with no delays (appreciable). |

The same issue of processing delay occurs with analogue connections too. The situation is made worse with Scart connected devices that are daisy chained, as I found when I had a DVD recorder connected between my Sky+ box and analogue TV. I found that taking the analogue audio output from the TV to the stereo cured any errors. |

I have an AV amp and connect its preamp outputs to the analogue input* on the Majestic. The AV gets the sound and vision via HDMI cables from the Sky box and BDP. I still have some Scart cables in my store/hoard but none in the system now.
Similarly to Dave's arrangements, occasionally I run stereo digital from my Sky HD box via digital coax to the Majestic. It does sound better than the AV approach which is much better than the TV's built-in speakers. * I found that setting the Majestic level control just past 12 o'clock gave enough gain to get a good AV channel balance (I use the AV amp's auto-setup) with a good signal to noise level on the AV signal. |
