The close proximity of components often means that interconnecting cables of a metre or more means a proliferation of coiled cable behind the average audio rack. The thickness of cables combined with a longer length than is necessary, in terms of distance between the components can also cause problems with the positioning of smaller, lightweight components.
It is rare to find interconnects of less than 0.5 or 0.6 metres and many begin at 1.5 metres. Is there a scientific reason for different cables being made to minimum lengths? Also does the application, material or the construction have a bearing on this? I have read that in certain instances longer cables of one type sound better than shorter cables of another but the whole subject of different sounding cables seems to be contentious! I have always thought that a shorter cable would be preferable because of capacitance but I suspect there is a lot more to this than I appreciate. |

I think it has more to do with what sells! There can be problems with very short interconnects in either kinking the cable when bending it tightly between items or the tendency with lighter equipment for the cable to pull it out of position. I have made shorter interconnects of about 300mm overall length by forming the cable bend before attaching the plugs to the ends to help prevent the cable wanting to straighten out and pull the attached devices over.
Excessive capacitance is usually a "bad" thing in cables, so the shorter the better, but there are exceptions! |

Just listen, if it sounds good to you, enjoy it.

Hi, long cables can be a bind, particualrly like mine they have tended to be very inflexible. I too am suprised that cable lengths are ofertn longer than really needed: my cable supplier tailors the size to my needs, whether mains (one very short cable 2cm outside of the plugs!), my others are typically 20-30cm, interconnects again sized to the cm and speaker cables unequal lengths. Some manufacturers (not wishing to naim them or russ to any conclusions
Given my cables are all extemely expensive, a few cms shorter can go a long way to reducing the overall costs. Yes you do have to be mindful to ensure the plugs/conectors are not stressed but proper planning and routing can mostly avoid this, particuarly if the cables can be tailored to size. I have a very short U-link between my Elevator and Revelation M; cannot remember the precise length but from memory around 15-20cm (I have already suggested a bespoke GSP cable could be made for this other users) my short length perfect for me. The only down side to custom lengths is that it could mean future flexibility is compromised but if sure you are settled go for it! Regards Richard

I find .8m or 1m generally does the trick for me, but it's a still a bit of a rats nest. I'd also like a short U shape cable between my Elevator/Reflex, but I think my CuSat would be a bit stiff for that small a bend.
urrgghh.... I just looked at whats behind my rack. 7 prs of interconnects, usb cable, 3 power supplies+cables (TT & EXP/Reflex), 3 mains cables, bi-wire speaker cables. mains block... and I don't even have my CD player in the system atm... a complete nightmare ![]() Maybe the missus does have a point ![]() Edited by DaveG - 01 Feb 2015 at 6:18pm |

Maybe we need U bend shapers like we have on the outlet hose of washing machines.

Hi DaveG. I will be undertaking some 'housekeeping' shortly so will try & take a picture to show you? Upgrading this cable -even short length I found beneficial. I did suggest to Jon at GSP - cannot rewcall precisely his comments but think perceoived demand was a concern - though suspect if you wanted a custom made - you can always ask? Given my cable management attempts I always try & physically separate any cables from touching one another, if need be with a relatively inert substance; mains in particular, but also interconnects.
Kind regards Richard

Shorter the better on analog IMO, although I agree about the mechanical challenges. I think others here have suggested that the 1.5m Lautus sounds better for digital than a shorter Cusat50.
John Cadman at GSP made me a custom cable so it can be done if you ask. Mine is a 0.6m Cusat50 version of the R-3 cable, which I am unashamed to say is both better made and better sounding than my DIY version. Shorter won't be much cheaper because it takes just as much work to make a 0.6m cable and the expensive parts like the phono or other plugs are the same. My sad experience on the cable mess/snake nest behind the boxes is that a new bit of kit arrives just after you've done the tidying. |

Open mind and ears whilst owning GSP Genera, Accession M, Accession MC, Elevator EXP, Solo ULDE, Proprius amps, Cusat50 cables, Lautus digital cable, Spatia cables and links, and a Majestic DAC. |
