Rega Exact

 

Plenty of dynamics and bass. Decent stereo image and plenty of room filling sound. I think it is load dependent, which I will go into later.

 

I fitted it using a Baerwald arc protractor printed out from another online forum's library. This, in my opinion, is much much better than the Rega standard alignment. However you lose the rigity of the three point mount because the front hole screw ends up at the end of the headshell. No extra spacers (for the Goldring I used the 4mm spacer on Rega's multi-height ring). 1.75g VTF at the surface of a standard LP (i.e. not a 180/200g). Bias/anti-skate set with the rough scale then adjusted for a central image on the middle tracks.

 

Rega don't publish a lot of electrical data for their cartridges. By inference the 47k and 100pF internal loading of their phono preamp would be the right loading. Out of curiosity I measured the Rdc and estimated the self-inductance of the Elys2 and my Exact by plotting the impedance/frquency graph. The Exact isn't perfectly matched, I made the left channel 163 Ohms and 100mH compared to 166 Ohms and 90mH for the right. Anyway 100mH and 165R is near enough for what comes next.

 

I plugged the 100mH and 165 Ohms into a couple of simple LC resonance models and came to this practical result:

 

Use the Genera's standard 220pF (plus 100pF for cables) loading with and 18K combined resistance. I used a t-adaptor and 29K resistor inside a phono plug to get this result. I think it sounds much better than 100pF and 47K.

 

Anyway I am enjoying listening to it. Helpful tip - it does a better job on clean records.
