Ok peeples, in advance of JC building my new stage, I have been excitedly exploring some old vin-wil (don’t shoot me, but this happens to be the Beastie Boys) - I have a warp/kink in the first track that makes it near unplayable, it’s like a crease to the point where the stylus actually skips back to the same groove regardless of tonearm counterbalance - any recommendations to ‘iron’ out a storage crease?

Once a record is damaged I'm afraid that's it, there is not a lot you can do. I have seen youtube videos where they have repaired damaged sections where the needle has been jumping, but when they have played the record you can quite clearly hear the the missing bit of sound where the repair was made. Personally I would just replace the record or just except that track or tracks is unplayable and skip them.

Edge warps or pinch warps are the most difficult to repair of any warp. The problem is that even if you manage to fix it, the grooves will likely be distorted and it will throw the music off pitch during that section. Tonearm might be moving side to side or shaking a bit during that section as well, even after flattening. Also, expensive record flatteners along cannot fix these types of warps without some intervention. You'll need to clamp on binder clips or add weight on the section where the edge warp is and there is no guarantee of success. I would practice with some junk records you don't care about before attempting this on a valuable album.

I suspect you will already have tried using a record clamp. They have helped on some of my warped records.

I wasn’t aware of record clamps, I was looking at it today and wondering if weighing it flat for a period would make any difference..?

I use a clamp myself, the JA Michell "R" one in conjunction with a 5mm slightly concave by design mat. This helps a lot with dish warps, bubble warps, etc. but cannot help edge warps at all. The only type of clamp that will help with an edge warp is an outer ring clamp and they tend to be extremely expensive (e.g. $500+). These outer ring clamps are often custom made for specific turntables and will not work on every type of turntable either. Setting the record under a bunch of heavy books is unlikely to fix the problem. Even if you temporarily "flatten" the record, it may "spring back" very quickly and again, edge warps are extremely difficult to fix. Storage edge warps usually form over a period of years and the records often get exposed to gradual heat or temp shifts while the owner is unaware. I've had it happen to me as well with some of the records I had in storage 15+ years and I've come across many, many records in used bins with the issue.

I have just been watching a video on YouTube by ‘TrackingAngle’ entitled: “Got a warped record? Or a warped sense of humor? The AFI FLAT.DUO claims it can flatten the record”
I only post it that way because the actual link would prevent my post from being posted… and forgive my spelling, I only tried to copy the title. I only mention it in case others are interested.
