Hi All, I have a question regarding recommended amplifier power for speakers. I have proprius amps and really fancy trying the monitor audio gold 100 6g speakers. The speakers are 4 ohm 86.5 dB sensitivity but ma recommend amp power of 130- 500w. I know the power supply has alot to do with it but I don't really grasp the technical side of it.
Am I best steering clear of this combo or would it be OK.
Cheers
Paul

Good equipment doesn't need high volumes or wattages to enable ample enjoyment of the music. Even an 86db sensitivity speaker will be very loud indeed at 100w!

Some of my speakers have a suggested amplifier power of up to 1000w. All that tells me is my ears will give up long before they will!

For a small room, or listening at moderate (hearing-preserving!) levels in a large room, I'd expect the Proprii would drive the Monitor Audios very well indeed.

But if I had a large room, and liked concert volume levels, I'd be buying from a dealer who'd support a home demo, or I'd be taking my rather-portable proprii to the demo room. Just to make sure!

If it helps I have run MA Gold GX300 speakers with my Proprius amps and they could go very loud, way above my needs. I have also used less sensitive speakers rated 82-83dB/1W with no problems. My listening room is about 20 M2 (200 sq ft). I have heard another system with Fact 8's (84dB) in a much larger room (over 50M2) powered by Proprius amps and it could go very loud without distortion.

It's the sound that counts and I second the earlier suggestion of a home demo with the speakers.

thanks for the replies. My room.is about 20 m2 so in theory they should be OK then. The graham audio ls6 is another speaker I'm thinking of and looking at the specs they should be fine also

Although the Proprius is only rated at 20wpc, it has whopping great output caps and so is much more capable of driving difficult loads than most manufacturers amps rated at 100wpc.

Use the loaner scheme and let your ears decide.
