For anyone who shrinks from watching television, quite understandable of course, can I point out the treasure trove of music documentaries on tv some of which are really top notch, e.g Ken Burns productions who has produced such as the American Civil War etc.

I only have freeview but have found the Smithsonian channel, PBS America, Sky Arts and BBC 4 to be very good sources some of which I have recorded and kept. Recording is best anyway then you can skip through the commercials.

All of these channels show the programmes in cycles so they are always available sooner or later, some are available on dvd. BBC 4 recently showed a documentary on the Ronnie Scott club which details the beginnings, his near lifelong struggle with depression right through to the present.
This was followed immediately by Ella at Ronnie Scotts, absolutely mint.

Tomorrow night on BBC 4 from 9pm to to 00.45 is the story of The Old Grey Whistle Test which may well show the track voted the best over the whole show which is Lynyrd Skynyrd's Free Bird about 9 - 10 minutes.

Probably my favourites have been the documentaries on the origins in America of Jazz, Folk, Country, the Big Swing Band era and Behop. Keep checking the schedules.

Classic TV with good music. I thought the Classic Albums series was really good, movie soundtracks is another and agree with you Tom about the music docs on the channels you mentioned.

Great tips Tom. That Ronnie Scott doc on BBC4 (still available on iPlayer) is excellent. Really enjoyed the clips of Nina Simone and also Dizzy Gillespie doing “Manteca”. Wish you were there kind of moments.

Great call, many memories of OG Whistletest in the 70's before jumping to The Tube in 80's and following Jools Holland in Later With. Always good for new live bands.

forgot about Jools Holland show another good show. They said last night you wont get shows like them anymore. Never watched The Tube, what channel was that on?  the only music shows on now a days are MTV and the like, and all they are interested in is chart stuff. Is there any shows on like TOGWT and JH ?
