Afternoon,

After a quick visit to HeadFi (bad idea), I discovered that Sennheiser have just released a new flagship model, the HD800. I've been ploughing through loads of websites and everything seems to be very positive about them, apart from the £1,000 price tag (Shocked Cry). Obviously this is meant to be a direct rival for the GS1000 (often not a favourite), the D7000, etc.

What do you guys think (as this forum seems to have a lot more realistic and mature users)? Would they be worth saving up for or for the people who "won the lottery" (i.e. you're rich and have loads of money to waste). I only ask as if they beat everything else, I would be tempted (insurance payout pending) simply for the SQ.

But then practically, are any set of cans really worth paying a grand for? I'm intrigued to hear people's opinions as most seem to favour sets like the ATH-W1000, the D5000 or the RS1s, all of which can be found for under £400 (or sometimes under £300) on eBay (choosing seller carefully of course)...

I would suggest that you first listen to the HD800. Ideally you would have your favorit can and music to compare them. If you find out you really like the HD800 and can't live w/o them ... well sell your first born. Evil%20Smile

Well, if Remasters by Led Zeppelin sent me to sleep this afternoon using the HD650...

Is the word comatose?

I don't like judging other manufacturers products because it can usually come back on me, but I feel in agreement with Miguel here.

But if I can force a performance out of them I will!

Miguel? Do you have a saying in the States for when driving "having to drive for others"?
That none should be able to park up and enjoy the view without a smartphone and the knowledge in how to use apps

Although Head-Fi posted the 1st impressions, there are quite a few that think they're pretty good....

Stereophile 1st Impressions

I agree with Miguel, try, but be prepared to buy.

That's what I was afraid you would say! Now I just have to wait for their release and UK stockists to be announced, then someone to burn a set in and start demos, somehow get on the VIP waiting list... Oh yeah, and finally get a set of cans that I can compare them to (still trying to decide)!

Graham, are you thinking of "backseat driver"? Another one is "armchair quaterback".
