There have been a few threads on volume control settings, power needs etc over recent months.
I reinstalled my old speaker cables last night for one last time before moving them on. Whilst I was pleasantly surprised how good they sounded when switching back to my current cables how much better they sounded BUT curiously what happened to the volume control. Whilst the cables are both of the same brand, my newer cables which had been installed for a year now sounded 'less loud' subjectively and found myself listening at around 1/2 - 1 hour louder on the volume control and within that the sound was far less fatiguing and more dynamic (as well as enjoyable). Whilst there may be some technical reasons my perception is that the reduced colouration allows higher volume listening - I think I picked this up with the accession over my old Revelation too! |

This is an odd thing that I've also noticed & not just with cables. For instance I put my TT on a Silent Stage platform the other week. It seemed to change the tonal balance a little - slightly leaner bass and perhaps a small improvement in overall SQ. Not a big change in the great scheme of things, but what is definite is that I want to crank the volume up a bit since I installed it.. maybe 1/2 a notch on average. Curious.

Nice to know it isn't just me then! Has happened to various degrees with other cables but not this much. Whether there could be any form of microphony issues I am not sure - with platforms it could be?

Hi,
Is it that the gear change resulted in a cleaner sound, with less interference or edgy nasties? The resulting lack of fake brilliance/edge might make you want to turn up the wick to add presence? OR...could it be the opposite? The changes knocked out some good high frequency sparkle, the sound now being a touch "dull"? Perhaps turning it up gives you the added presence you miss? Just thinking out loud. Mick. |

Hi mick. No negatives at all superior in every department. Best description a bit like comparing a less than perfect cd vs well recorded vinyl. More of your scenario 1. There appeared an element of compression to the sound and just a bit loud sounding. Probable lack of colouration -again reminds me a bit of using the accession.
