With the Bitzie USB DAC being launched I'm writing up instructions and all sorts of stuff.
For those not au-fait with these things, I have to tell them about the software a computer needs to use to be able to play their "flacs, wavs, apes etc" I have been using Foobar2000, and also the "add-on" ASIO4ALL which tells me the Bitzie accepts 24-bit at 48kHz, which means the Bitzie is bit-perfect for 24/48. However, I have many music files and a few are equal or greater than 24/96, and I'm sure many people are so confused about specifications they may think they cannot play anything higher than 24/48 using the Bitzie. The thing is that these music players recognise the plug&play Bitzie and downsample to 48kHz or 44.1kHz, and everything works fine... But I've noticed I can tell a difference between Foobar2000 and the VLC media player, and I think the VLC may just have the edge! Calling on the knowledge of the experts on here, what do you think of the different freeware players, and which operating systems do they work on? And what is your favourite? |

I started using FooBar2000 myself after reading this article.
It's a bit out of date but has some interesting tidbits of info. Is 24/96 not supported by the Bitzie's USB interface chip? I've heard good things about the Tenor TE7022 being used for USB DACs that support up to 96k. Then again, anything over 44k is quite possibly frivolous. |

99% of my file playing is done via various Squeezeboxes, but when I want to play play FLACs from my Mac I use either Play or Cog. Both of which work very well . . .
In the past I've used dbpoweramp on the PC (shareware, though).

On MS Windows systems more recent than XP the Wasapi plug-in for Foobar may give better results than the ASIO4all WDM wrapper. Event mode is purportedly the better but may require adjustment of the buffer size to work properly. The whole SRC issue is a minefield and quality of output very dependent on how and where it is done, generally considered better not to let Windows interfere in this part of the playback stream. VLC may well be a better player, the flexibility of foobar being it's greatest strength, I have had up to 6 different audio devices configured/installed on the one system and could use foobar through any I selected with no issues or conflicts and concurrently with using the onboard audio for TV playback through a different amp and speakers. Unfortunately, transparency of operation of SRC is rarely in favour of maximum SQ. |

I tended to use Foobar and I found Wasapi was the best solution for Windows 7.
Not sure it was the best player but it supported Wasapi and also lots of plugins for various formats and had a upnp plug in as well for DNLA/UPNP servers. |

Any bit rate is supported but maximum sampling frequency is 48kHz. At time of research and development the Tenor TE7022 was not available to a UK company the size of ours. As I believe most people's collections could predominantly be 16/48 or 24/48 tops then I would have thought a 24/96 superfluous but understand the lure of implied improvement. However, none of the other USB DACs on the market feature our additional analogue output stage which we include in the Bitzie which is exclusive to the Bitzie. In fact many simply use the analogue output of the chip straight out, or add a couple of resistors and capacitors to partially roll-off the sampling frequency, or use a proprietary audio chip which are designed to "make do". The fact is that with the use of software players which you incidentally need anyway to run ASIO or similar for bit-perfect output you simply click on the automatically recognised USB CODEC option from its menu and you can play any resolution you want using the Bitzie. |

At the risk of taking this thread in a sideways direction
I thought folk may like to know that the March issue (!) of HiFi News carries a piece by Christopher Breunig about the current state of (classical) downloads and (commercial) players to play the files on. He noted sound differences between the software players - with Amarra being the best (likened to 1960s Decca analogue sound!). His auditioning kit included "a Graham Slee headphone amp" . . . .(BTW I have an online subscription to HFN - I don't know when the print copy will hit the shops.) Back to the thread . . . . |
