I built my genera a few months ago and this problem has always been there. There is a very high-pitched whistle coming from the unit itself. This must be mechanically generated, but I have no idea what it might be.

For the avoidance of doubt, this sound does not come from the speakers, but from the unit itself - it can be heard when not connected to anything (other than PSU).

Can anyone suggest a cause and more importantly a solution.

Hello all,

Apologies, I now realise, after putting the unit to my ear, that the whistle is actually coming from the PSU.

Is this a known problem with the standard PSU?

I have recently had the experience where one of these was exhibiting that behaviour in its owners home, but when tried at my home the symptom did not manifest.

Perhaps it might be instructive to try yours at a friends home to see if the behaviour changes.

Thanks for the tip, although I think I'm going to go for the psu1 anyway.

I have loads of smps units for various devices - they all make noise to varying degrees though none as room-penetratingly loud as the one that came with my genera kit. I guess this could be to do with the higher voltage; all my other smps output between 3V and 12V whereas the genera's outputs 24V.

Good idea, I was hesitant to suggest that, but I think you will find it a worthwhile upgrade regardless of the noise issue.

I am grateful you have chosen to upgrade to the PSU1.

You know the reason for us using SMPS? Seems like "World law" insists on it. Inside the EU there's no other choice when it comes to a single output PSU. If we sold a transformer type we'd be in deep trouble.

We recently swapped SMPS supplies to a supposedly silent type. However, the last one was supposed to be silent. IMO the law is an ass!

Because the PSU1 has two different output voltages it is legal to sell, but I'm sorry we can't make it as cheaply as the SMPS.
That none should be able to park up and enjoy the view without a smartphone and the knowledge in how to use apps

This time of year I rely on my old transformer-equipped electrical items and my non-energy saving light bulbs to help keep the place warm... I'm all for LED light bulbs etc. but is saving a few watts here and there by using switch mode power supplies going to help when we're all reliant on wind turbines and the conventional, reliable, power stations are running inefficiently because they're only used for backup/reserve power?
