Hello,
 
I've been considering buying some LS3/5A monitors for a few months now however the £1040 price tag is putting me off. I feel stupid for considering paying this amount of money on speakers, even if they are excellent value for money. They're expensive but ultimately affordable. However, after looking around a bit on the internet, it seems that I might be able to buy the cabinets and speaker-mounted baffles separately for a significantly reduced price than it would cost me to purchase the assemblies. I could then sit myself down with all the parts and build them myself. I don't mind doing this and it's a great learning exercise however I'd like to ask you guys here if you'd be willing to advise me if I run into any trouble with it. I mean, if I get stuck and have to post some pictures.
 
I've easily taken a Sennheiser HD250 headphone to pieces and reassembled it so I shouldn't be completely useless with regard to building the monitors although I know speakers have more components to them than headphones. Hopefully you guys will be willing to lend a hand if I get stuck... Confused

Hi Ash,
Good to see that you're considering building a kit speaker. As you may have discovered there are quite a few kit suppliers. If you are close enough to one of them it would probably be wortwhile dropping in for a demo.
In any event I'm sure help will be forthcoming from fellow forum members should you need it.
I really do think the experience of building and then enjoying the results cannot be underestimated!

Stirling themselves seem to sell LS3/5A components on Ebay. If I'm understanding this page correctly, I get everything here to build a complete pair for about £510, less than half of the £1040 for the assembled monitors! That's great value and the major assemblies have already been completed. Smile At least if I assemble the rest myself, I won't have to be afraid of screwing Proprius monoblocks into the backs of the monitors because I will know where the interior components are.

What do you think Ian? The remaining assembly looks straightforward because most of it has been done. But at least I will see all the fixtures first-hand so I will know how it all fits together.

Must admit that I haven't come across their eBay shop before, amazing what you can find if you persevere. Looks like a good deal, particularly as they are direct from Stirling. Assembly should be quite straightforward, and you have a choice of veneer finishes.
Let us know if you take the plunge into DIY.

Like Ian, I think the kit idea is a great one Ash... It looks like you only have to do the final assembly, and get a 50% discount for your trouble! If I read it right there are versions with a screwed on back, and a glued on back. I'd suggest the screwed on back might be a better option in case you ever need to open them up again ...

Hey there,

Thanks for getting back to me, you guys. Yes, I noticed that the "Hybrid" cabinets have a glued on back whilst the "Reference" cabinets have a screwed on back. However, the front baffle appears to be screwed on as well so if I need to open a glued-back unit after assembly, can I not just unscrew the front baffle and lift it away??

P.S. A £530 dsicount is too good to ignore. That would almost buy a Proprius or an ULDE. Thumbs Up I can't properly evaluate the Bitzie until I have a speaker system. I'm selling headphones at the moment to make space for some monitors. I'm aiming for the ultimate audio performance and efficiency in my very small bedroom. I'll probably get this kit, especially as you guys have shown interest in getting involved as well. Smile

It's almost tempting to say 'what's the catch', I'm assuming they don't come with grilles? might be wrong but they seem cheap to get anyway. Another one to tempt me away from my Neats;)
