My original U.S. pressing of Leonard Cohen's first album "Songs of Leonard Cohen" from 1967 has less surface noise than some LPs from the new millennium which were new and sealed when I purchased them. How is this possible?
Whether new or used, I clean all my LPs with the same Disc Doctor cleaning fluid and the same brushes. The quality of some new pressings is very disappointing. |

Another mystery: I have some LPs which look very scratched and worn-out but are still very quiet in terms of surface noise, and I have some LPs which look very clean, without any visible scratches but which are very noisy.

totally agree with you i also tend to find that the really thin flimsy copies sound way better than there super thick 200g copies.

Well, most if not all Lps are coated with pressing residue, a compound which allows easier separation between the press and the vinyl. This causes indifferent sound ("dead" middle range and stifled highs and lows) plus, very often, noisy snap, crackle and pop!
The way to deal with it is to use a dedicated cleaning fluid and a vacuum cleaner. AKid, I don't know if that's your case?
As for the difference in sound between thin and heavy vinyl, Stuxter, have you considered your VTA settings? Adjusting them will get you amazing results. Of course, you still have to consider just how clean the vinyl is, as in above... great hobby this, or what?
There are some awful pressings, though. My brand new, sealed copy of Pulp's "Different Class" is a sad case in point... great tracks nevertheless.
