A while ago, I replaced the Rega felt mat on my P3-24 with a Ringmat 330 MKII and a little later with the Ringcap. Definitely an improvement in midrange clarity and extension at both ends of the spectrum. Have any of you made comparisons with the Ringmat and the Funk Firm 3mm Achromat? Any other recommendations?
Best regards to all.

I use and like the Achromat, I use a 3mm Achromat over a 2mm silicone on an SL-1200 and the 5mm Achromat over an acrylic platter on the Rega P2 based TT that I own. I have not tried the Achromat on the glass platter nor have I compared it to the Ringmat. |

I got a 12" diameter black felt place mat from the local "lifestyle" store and put a hole in the middle.
It was an improvement over the Technics slip mat. The store stopped doing them a few weeks ago... |

Graham, I'm sure the felt place mat works better than the original Technics (lucky you own a 1200) mat. But on the Rega glass the Ringmat is superior.
I have an alternative acrylic mat for the Rega, but I thought the acrylic softened the bass, muddied the midrange, and slowed down the transients. So I returned to the glass cum Ringmat. I might try the Achromat (with return privileges, of course) on the acrylic. The Groovetracer delrin platter might be an improvement over all with no need for any mat, but I can't part with that much $$$ now. Regards, Rod

Rod, my acrylic platter is from Groovetracer (the delrin one was not being made at that time) - I decided to try the Achromat on that after two reviews on tnt-audio reported improvements when using it on the acrylic platter of Michell Orbe decks. I had previously been using a weight of app 600gms with the acrylic platter and also use it with the Achromat, IMO the weight helps the Achromat to do what it does. On the acrylic platter I felt it to reduce an amount of "hardness" and improve definition and detail while giving a very balanced presentation overall. To me it sounds like it is doing what is claimed for it in reducing the resonances induced in the record itself by the stylus interaction. I have tried a good few different mats, on a number of decks, including the SDS mat, the Iron Audio acrylic mat, the Extreme Phono "non-felt" and "speedmat", felt, thin rubber, thick rubber and thin silicone. To me the Achromat gives the most balanced presentation, most of the mats have characteristics that accord with their material, the "Sound Dead Steel" does not sound dead but does sound steel, acrylic sounds hard and bright, rubber deep and powerful but deadened, felt woolly etc. The Achromat might need an interlayer of some type to give of its best on a glass platter, much as I use the 2mm silicone on the Technics to provide damping of the platter and grip and drive for the Achromat. I would suggest using a weight (the Bren is good) or clamp (Michell alloy) with the Achromat. I would also suggest getting the Groovetracer sub-platter before the acrylic or delrin platter. The SRM tech bearing damping ring and platter damping ring for the glass platter might be worth a try too. Lots of things to try, have fun Tony Edited by tg - 01 Dec 2012 at 6:58am |
