Why do they always insist on doing it wrong!? Why don't they do it right just for once and make them all analog remasters directly from the master tapes? Is it so hard for record companies like EMI to understand that people who like audiophile vinyl dislike digital remasters? Even it is the awesome full 192 khz it won't rival the real deal.
If, relatively speaking, small scale companies like Analogue Productions, MFSL and Speakers Corner can do it, what's stopping them?
And if they insist on crumming up theirs, at least let the beforementioned companies give it a shot as well with their own catalogues of Beatles albums. Surely they would if they could? I know MFSL did one in the 80's but those are now of course as expensive as UK first pressings.
I'd love to update my record collection with some truly great sounding Beatles albums but I'm not sure wheter I'll prefer many of these digital records over my current slightly worn originals.

Yes I see/hear where you're coming from on this. I heard these were the CD remasters put onto vinyl so (A)DDA, albeit with a lot of restoration work in the digital domain.
Has anyone else tried recording and digitally restoring the original LP's? It gives the vinyl warmth without the worst scratches and clicks and you can lower the noise floor a bit without too many side effects. My Beatles LP's are well played so it was not a wholly satisfactory outcome even with deep cleaning.

I hope I don't regret this posting...  (and thanks to Graham for his GSH and this image in old thread)

I used a program called clickrepair when I made a few rips about a year or two ago. It automatically (according to parameters set by you) removes most non-belonging noise. A nice thing is you can see on display where it actually "alters" the recording and unless it's a very nosiy one it just swoops in here and there and picks out the baddies for you. It really seemed to be quite undestructive to the recorded music so if you need to clean up a rip made from an unminty record I'd recommend you give it a try. There should be a trial version, all functional but void after a week or so. I stopped making rips so I never kept the program but would if I'd continued making them.
BTW, what's with the wicker man picture? Confused

Ah, ClickRepair! I wouldn't be without it Big smile.

I think it works by statistically analysing the data for the "probability" of a spike being non-music. Changing settings alters the algorithm used, and how strongly it's applied.

For a bad case of tick and pops I usually run the file through it twice on a fairly benign setting of 20 for clicks, but choose "reverse" for the first run. Since non-music events have virtually zero decay attacking them from the back (when they aren't looking LOL) seems sensible. The second pass (on the same 20 setting) finds far, far fewer candidates for eliminating. As the program appends "cr", "cr1" etc to each saved file it's easy to load more than one file back into the wave editor and compare the results from each pass.

When in use you can also monitor the before or after output from the program, or just listen to the clicks and pops being zapped. But monitoring slows the process to real time playing of the file so I rarely do it.

There are loads more ways to use the program and like suede I throughly recommend it to anyone doing LP rips. It can turn horrendous surfaces into listenable music, and tickey but otherwise ok sides into virtually perfect audio . . . .

And to think I used to manually re-draw the waveform to eliminate the worst clicks Shocked

I wasn't sure that my suggestion of v-ripping would be received as positively as it has been!

VinylStudio is the package I use. It does all the restoration work to your settings and pulls down LP track names and other information to save typing it in.

Allright, I thought I missed a pun somewhere.
Does VinylStudio include a noise removal tool and is it any good then? The auto cataloguing seems very useful
