Hi all!

Full disclosure, I have no expereince of dedicated phono stages as I have generally been digitally focused but have been converted after inheriting my parents vinyl collection from the 50s/60s/70s including a hand full of mono recordings. Now suplimented by many more of my own favourites from 70s onwards Big smile

My system comprises of a Garrard 401, SME 3009 S2 imp, Shure V15-3 (came free with the Vinyl) with a new Jico SAS stylus. On the output side I have a pair of Merdian 605 monoblocks driving Kef 107s which I refurbished last year. 

I recently replaced my Merdian 603 Pre (High end, but mid 1990s)  with a new Audiolab 9000Q and i couldn't believe the improvement in the inbuilt phono stage. I held back funds intending to add a dedicated phono stage and had in mind the Reflex M but i'm now wondering whether the Accession is warrented ;)

I nearly pushed the buy button tonight but pulled up at the last second and thought I would introduce myself and see if there were any opinions particulary regarding the match to my system and expectations I should have improving the on 9000Q phono stage.

Welcome to the Forum Chas.
The Garrard 401/SME 3009/Shure M75 is quite a classic combination and capable of excellent sound. I would however suggest that the Shure can now be bettered by a more modern cartridge, Ortofon 2M range work nicely with the SME. If you've not already done so the Garrard would benefit from a service, the idler wheel, it's bearings and the main bearing all require maintenance to ensure top performance. ( Take a look at Loricraft, Classic HiFi and Peak Hifi, just 3 examples of those that service Garrards)
As for the phono stage, the best way to assess whether it will improve things would be to make use of the loan service, try out the Reflex or Accession at home for a week or so. Contact John Cadman to arrange a loan. Either telephone (number at bottom of page) or drop him a PM.

The Garrard was owned by my father from new. His father used to work in the factory that made them so I think they got them cheap back in the day! I have purchased a service pack from Classic HiFi back in November, including springs and bush set etc and also a new idler wheel and thrust base plate. I have yet to do the work tho. Youtube videos and forums are a god send!!

I had looked at the Ortofon 2m range but, without listening, came to the conlusion to keep it classic. You have piqued my curiousty!.

Back in the 60s I could never afford the 401/SME 3009 combination so made do with the ubiquitous Garrard SP25, which served me well until I bought a Garrrard Zero 100SB. I acquired my 401 about 35 years ago, it's on it's 3rd idler wheel now! Servicing them is not a difficult job if you have some mechanical knowledge. I would recommend taking plenty of photos before disassembly though. The mechanical linkages are all Cadmium plated, so care (these days!) is needed not to have contact with them, Nitrile gloves are recommended. Like all circlips the Garrard ones will make a bid for freedom if given half a chance, along with the small springs. When dismantling, I use a large plastic (The ones that come with Oven Cleaner are useful) bag to contain the deck, to catch the errant circlips! The motor is the most difficult to reassemble, but probably the most worthwhile as the bearings do dry out.

I agree a loan of the Reflex and the Accession is a good idea. Decide which one works best for your needs.

I also think getting that turntable serviced (whether yourself or by a 3rd party) is a very good idea.

The Jico SAS is a Namiki/Orbray Microridge profile with a 2-3um minor radius. I definitely don't recommend that profile for old mono records from the 50s and 60s as those records weren't designed for it and you'll get more groove noise even with the mono switch engaged.

If your SME arm has a detachable headshell (IIRC some do, some don't) then it might be worth it to have more than one cartridge. For the old mono records a conical stylus was traditionally used but a fatter elliptical or advanced profile could work (6-8um minor radius) fine.

As you may know Jico has released their own versions of the Shure 44 series and plans to make a new V15 as well.

I'm not the biggest fan of the Ortofon 2M series but as long as you move past the awful "Red" model they are very decent cartridges. You can probably hear one at a dealer somewhere and go from there.
SL-1200 MK7 (modified) + Reflex M + PSU-1 used with AT150-40ML, AT VM610 MONO, AT VM95ML, Stanton 680mkII + Ogura, and Shure M35X cartridges.

The idler on mine is original but at least seems to run smoothly. I think the turntable has had very little use since the mid 70s, maybe less than 50hrs. I suspect the rubber has hardened with age and lost some traction. I have a new one as it's easy to replace. As a for a full strip down I was hoping to avoid this in the first instance. I've be getting in and around the mechanism to apply some lubrication, replace bushes and springs etc so I thought i would have a poke around at the general condition of everything else so will make a judgement then. But honestly it's in pretty imaculate (original) condition. I've made an MDF plinth for it to sit in.

Good tips for hanging on to errant clips!

I messaged John who gave me call yesterday evening. After a long chat I ended up ordering the Accession. I think I would have always wondered Big smile. I just have to wait for it now!

I hadn't appreciated the SAS stylus really wasnt suited to mono records. It isn't a key factor for me tbh. I have a few recordings but only a handful. I'll keep my old unbranded stylus in reserve. I have the original SuperTrack stylus but it has lost its diamond. 

I have quite a few Quadrphonc recordings since this was my dads thing. He still has the Sony decoder a pair or Rogers amps and 4 KEF Concertos! Not something I think I will experiementing with tho. 

My arm has the fixed headshell so not an option to quick swap them. My dad gave his other SME arm with a detachable head (trial fitted in the picture) to my cousin. It wasn't the improved version tho. 

I wasnt aware Jico had released their own carts! Will keep that in mind but think I will enjoy what I have for a while.
