ARGON TT4 MK2 > Graham Slee phono stage > Loki Mini+ EQ > Audiolab 6000A > Tannoy Mercury M2s

Hi all,

I've just added a Schiit Loki mini+ EQ to my system and am getting horrible speaker buzz when i tun it all on.

The turntable is grounded to the Phono stage (I also get the same issue if grounded to the amp).

The Loki does not have a grounding clip.

Having unplugged the phono stage and gone directly from the TT to the EQ (and then the amp) the problem goes away.

Any thoughts on a solution?

Any way to ground the EQ safely?

Could the (decent) interconnects be an issue?

Many thanks for your kind input.

Jethro

SOLVED!

Added a 2nd grounding wire from the TT to a Loki baseplate screw.

(had previously only tried it on a backplate screw, no joy).

all working perfectly now!

Strange you've had to do that.
I've only ever had to do a single ground-wire, from the turntable to either the amp or phono amp.
Still as it works that's good news.

Record players and phono stages usually need to be grounded. I think the Loki EQ lacks a proper ground link from input to output, with your extra wires you have addressed this.

The company that makes the Loki often releases gear that is full of quirks and flaws - then customers become paying beta testers for their products.

I had two pieces here from their early days and both were a lot noisier than any of their talk or spec sheets would indicate. Glad to be rid of them.

Not too long ago they had a turntable that was manufactured incorrectly and headphone amps that caught on fire.

Glad OP was able to sort things out though.

Turns out it wasn't the Loki after all -  it was a dodgy cable.

I've reconnected everything with some shorter RCA cables that I'd just cut down from a longer (too long) set, (but with the Fisual cable back in the mix) and all the buzz came back.

I removed the Fisuals from the mix, and all fine again; TT grounded to phono stage, Loki EQ not grounded (as designed) and all is well in the world again.

[everyone loves an intermittent fault!]

I'm not familiar with the Fisual brand.

As you may know the thing to check for with cables are that they use good quality connectors that work properly with RCA jacks (no "loose" fit) and that the cable itself is well shielded with the shield connected at both ends.

If it's a phono cable and you're using a high output, non-MC cart, you'll want to make sure the capacitance is low.
