I've been considering cartridges with integrated headshells. As far as I can see the connector-to-stylus distance on these is 52mm. My turntable needs 51.2mm.

So my question is - will the 0.8mm difference be important? I'm surmising that elliptical styluses will be less fussy than line-trace types. . .

Edit: probably worth saying that I've been eyeing up an Ortofon SPU Synergy GM Wink

If it's the common detachable headshell you could try removing the rubber washer Star Question

Probably stating the obvious here... The extra overhang won't be a problem if you adjust the offset angle to get the same nulls you had before using a (non-arc) protractor. It is unlikely to affect the arm's effective mass and resonance. I like Graham's tip about the rubber washer!
Jon

Open mind and ears whilst owning GSP Genera, Accession M, Accession MC, Elevator EXP, Solo ULDE, Proprius amps, Cusat50 cables, Lautus digital cable, Spatia cables and links, and a Majestic DAC.

SPU Synergy is a nice cart, guessing you are looking at a used one ?

It is pretty heavy @ 30gm and will need a substantial counterweight.

What arm are you considering using it on ?

You cannot adjust the offset angle, overhang or azimuth of an SPU generally speaking.

As discussed elsewhere, different alignments will use differing overhang and offset angles.

These differing alignments will vary the spread of tracking angle error across the record.

The nominated overhang for any arm will depend on the arm manufacturers chosen alignment and null points.

How audible will this be ? I'm not at all sure.

If it is sufficiently important I could perhaps run a test or two as I do have an arm where the difference from the manufacturers spec is 2mm (and a Synergy GM) - might take a few days though.

Thanks, Jon and Tony . .

Yes, I would be trying to find a used SPU Synergy!

I'd be using it on my Kenwood KD7010 (aka 990 etc), whose arm, as far I can gather is pretty decent. It works well with a number of MCs - though none approaching anywhere near 30gm! I was wondering about how I'd achieve the balance, too.

Maybe I'm just trying to fit a square peg into a round hole - and that this is a total non starter. I can't help thinking that a Synergy would play very nicely through an Elevator/Accession combo . . Wink

Your kind offer, Tony, of doing that test with the Synergy is something I'd be very grateful for! Thumbs Up But the difference I'm talking about is 0.8mm, not 2mm!

What is the thickness of the washer?
