I received my Reflex C on Monday and here it is Thursday and I feel compelled to comment...

Lest you die from suspense, I'm shocked at what an improvement the Reflex C is over my PS Audio GCPH. I've been on the vinyl upgrade path this fall, beginning with purchasing a Mark V platter and bearing for my venerable VPI HW Mark II. Once that not small task was accomplished, I upgraded my Dynavector 10x5 to a Dynavector 20x2 low output. My arm is an SME IV. Better, but not the magic I was hoping for. Finally, I sprung for the Reflex C after considering many competitors (many! there is a lot of competition at this price point). If it's of interest, I was swayed by the fact this is a single-purpose component--low output MC--and reasoned that other phono preamps were trying to be Swiss Army knives addressing MM and low and high output MC. I also tried to read the reviews carefully and the promise of solid-state design (imperative because of living near eight television and radio broadcast towers) with tube-like warmth was appealing.

Of course I plugged it in and immediately put on a record. Ugh. An hour later I tried again, not bad. About six hours in, I wondered if it needed to get better--it sounded great! I have played so many LPs over the last few days and feel like I've finally rediscovered the magic of vinyl. Joni Mitchell of course, Donald Fagen, The Civil Wars, Yes, Bonnie Raitt, Alan Parson, Judith Owen, James Taylor, and Phoebe Snow, just to name a few. I have an excellent digital front end--Bryston BDP1 and Line Magnetic 502--but the vinyl--finally--sounds better. I compared the quite good digital of Phoebe Snow to the vinyl and the vinyl was organic while the digital was simply accurate.

I would say that upgrading to the Reflex C has made more difference that going from the $450 10x5 to the $850 20x2, and I would have bet that it wouldn't. And, if all reports are right, it will continue to improve! I'm hearing so much more detail and transparency that I feel like I have a new record collection. And it does the enviable trick of quieting the record as well. I pulled out an old copy of Fleetwood Mac's Then Play On thinking it would be marginal. Instead, I listened to the entire side without getting up.

Cheers!

I'm also in receipt of a Reflex C which arrived this afternoon along with a CuSat50 interconnect courtesy of the UK loan scheme, it's currently warming up in preparation for the listening evaluation starting tomorrow. No recorded material for me tonight as instead it was a live musical performance by three leading British folk musicians who have recently formed a band called Leveret, their first cd is released next month (although it was on sale tonight). As the gig was in a 95 seat theatre created in a 14th century building formerly part of a Benedictine abbey I am also now warming up!

Good review Bob.
As you say there's fierce competition in the phono stage market & the Reflex C trumps them!

Having had the use of a Reflex C on the loan programme for a few days now and having appreciated the improvements in musical presentation heard in my system I've drawn the conclusion the C must stand for considerable. I suspected the Rondo Red was retrieving detail from the grooves that the valve phono stage wasn't delivering and that's proved the case, played through the Reflex C elements that were missing before are now all presented as part of an improved and wider soundstage.

The first two records played - The Doobie Brothers (The Captain and Me) and Be Bob Deluxe (Axe Victim) - are both 40 years old and the Reflex C certainly breathed new life into this old vinyl. Robbie Robertson's first two solo albums are both good demo records and Storyville in particular has well structured songs with multi-layered instruments all of which are now clearly evident and precisely positioned in a three dimensional soundstage. The dynamic presentation is also greatly improved through the Reflex C, effectively demonstrated by the authoritative bass and drum interaction on Stanley Clarke's 1974 album School Days.

Buying vinyl from second hand shops can be a bit of a lottery, what looks like a clean unmarked surface can prove deceptive when you get home to find the playback compromised by surface noise. Such was the case with a 1960 record of Frank Sinatra with the Count Basie Orchestra but through the Reflex C the pops and crackles are less pronounced and anyway soon disappear into the huge soundstage of the Quincy Jones produced album.

Getting up to date, recent releases from Hurray for the Riff Raff, First Aid Kit and Frazey Ford all benefit from the sonic improvements that the Reflex C makes possible and in particular a 10 inch EP from Emily Barker and the Red Clay Halo. Put out for National Record Day this year and featuring four covers this record was unusually recorded straight to vinyl: no overdubs and no chance to edit, a revealing 'warts and all' style of production. I once took this record to a vinyl event organised by a hi-fi dealer where it was played on a very expensive system on demonstration and was underwhelmed by the sterile presentation. Not so through the Reflex C, especially Barker's emotionally charged delivery of Tom Waits' Day after Tomorrow, having seen them perform live a couple of times this was indeed very impressive and realistic.

The loan also included a CuSat50 interconnect so the sonic improvements brought about in my system from the Reflex C would likely have been further enhanced by the compatibility of the two.

C also of course stands for Christmas so I've added a Reflex C to my list although I suspect this may be beyond Santa's pocket, at least for the time being.

But wait! One of the Christmas presents for SWMBO is a 180 gram copy of smoothie Bryan Ferry's latest, now if I play my cards right... LOL

Merry Christmas to all Forum members and everyone at GSP.

Good description Malcolm & tellingly you use 'sterile' to describe a very expensive system.
I know exactly what you mean & I've heard some like that - underwhelming as you say.
You never know, a ReflexC might turn up in your Xmas stockingThumbs Up.
Happy Christmas.
