Hello all,

So my Arcam FMJ CD37 is not reading any discs and is coming up with BAD DISC.  THe noises that it makes (and Ill try my hardest to describe in words)  It makes a quick full spin of the CD when first loading.  Then followed by a quick and short rrrtttt, kkkrrtt.  NOt a clunk or a click.  Trys to make another spin but followed by this same short kkkrrtt.  Then several more what I would describe as 1/4 or 1/2 spins and then kkkrrtt.  It then comes up with Bad Disc on the display.  It does this for perfect CDS.  Ive tried switching off and on agian.  No luck.  Ive tried switching it off/on with a disc in the tray - same problem.

The last opperation of the CD player was fine no unusal noises and it is always stopped properly before ejecting the CD.  I also never turn off my CD player but the other day there was a power cut.  Dont know if this is connected in any way.  The CD player wasnt being used at the time.

For me it sounds like something mechanical is mislined.  The only thing I can think of to help other than swtiching it off and praying that by some miracle it will resolve it self in the morning is to see if some form of cleaning the laser may help? But Im doubting this.

It had one previous owner before myself on ebay and I have probably had it now for around 2 years.  Im always careful with my CD player as it has mechanical moving parts so if I need to move it I do it gently.  I did move it very recently to unplug and plug everything back into my AVR after having trouble with the sub preout, which is another unresolved send off to get repair job but again this was done gently.

Any suggestions anyone?  I feel like my sterio is falling apart around me :(

I've just looked at my copy of the user guide for this CD player, which unfortunately does not include any trouble-shooting help. It does, however, suggest contacting Arcam customer support if you have problems with the device  -  I would suggest that should be your first port of call ... www.arcam.co.uk

Sorry I can't offer anything better.

So i had a look at thier website and it states this:

"Please note that the responsibility for servicing Arcam products rests with the Arcam retailer. It may be that the fault condition is simple to resolve and they can fix it themselves, or that the dealer needs to engage the support of Arcam or one of our national distributors. Please note that we are unable to engage with Arcam owners directly when it comes to servicing equipment."

Not sure where this leaves me, as I bought it second hand.

I may still have a word with my local seven oaks dealer as they have been good to me in the past and I still need to get my AVR pioneer fixed which I did buy directly from them

Rather disappointing but I suppose this is because they only sell new equipment through retailers.

Could be there's no-one in the UK who knows how they're built, Albeit they maintain they're designed in the UK. Strictly speaking the dealers are the ones to deal with problems of equipment they sold, but to offer no support beyond that is truly disappointing.
Just listen, if it sounds good to you, enjoy it.

IIRC Avondale Audio in Chesterfield used to hotrod some Arcam players.

They are mainly Naim service but might be worth a call if not too far from you.
