Something triggered memories today regarding my very first hi-fi system. Moving on from the family radiogram with autochange in the mid 1960s I bought a Connoisseur BD1 turntable kit which my father fitted into a solid block of mahagany! Amplifier was  Leak Delta 30 and speakers were a Goodmans kit from Comet. Again, my father machined the chipboard for the speaker enclosures ( he was a precision engineer! ) and a woodworking teacher friend veneered them.

This system was the envy of many friends as the sound was quite good, but it was the start of a long never ending journey!

Adrian.

Yes, the old radiogram in the 60's. A HMV in teak with a Garrard SP25 Mk 2 autochanger.
Nothing really then until the early 80's. A Dual 505-2 turntable fitted with an Ortofon mm cartridge, a NAD 3020 integrated amp and KEF Celeste 4 speakers. I'd love to compare that set up with my existing just out of curiosity. It sounded wonderful at the time.

I remember for my 18th birthday my mum bought me a Technics amp and tape player but I had to buy the speakers, a pair of really cheap and nasty Tensai things from Tottenham Court Road (what did I know). With my first pay cheque I got a pair of Mission 70 MKIIs followed by a Dual CS514...........can't believe on 2 occasions I carted items back from central London!

Connoiseur BD1 kit with Acos Lustre GST1 tonearm (I still have this tonearm, but it's not in use). One of my older brothers built the box with Perspex lid for me. A Rotel amp (I don't remember which model) and Comet's own label Solavox (S30?) speakers. All bought from Comet in Oxford, where one of my brothers was working.

Probably, but I don't remember. I think the BD1 kit cost £14.99 and the Acos £23.10.

Our family music player was an HMV music centre - a tuner-amp with an SP25 on top. I persuaded my Dad to ditch the HMV speakers and replace them with Tannoy 3LZs. Never looked back! Wink
