I even had one complain suggesting I'm no part of the company anymore and a marketing man does all my writing.

Nowt as funny as folk - as they say round here. Wink

but is this marketing working, Graham?

Good question. The video I did has had 170,000 views and 65,000 click throughs to the website according to my Google ad words account. If 10% ended up in sales during the time the video has been up, then we'd have sold 6,500 products in less than six months. However, so far it has resulted in no sales whatsoever. Our company could have had £20,000 more profit in 2012 if we'd not spent it on marketing.

But you have to ask this. If there were no website, no forum, no ads, do you think with absolutely nobody knowing we exist we'd be in business.

I may be breaking some illusions here but we don't do this just as a hobby - it's our jobs!

We really like doing what we do, but even in Yorkshire we have to have somewhere to live to bring up our kids... I have found more recently that lots of people think we are a public service and should do what we do for free.
That none should be able to park up and enjoy the view without a smartphone and the knowledge in how to use apps

Surely you must be putting down your marketing efforts. How can you say that the video had resulted in zero extra sales? How could you attribute a sale directly to e.g. the video or a newsletter? I'm quite sure I wouldn't have purchased a Reflex M and CuSat if I hadn't found this forum, its members and the loan scheme, but surely my purchase can't in anyway be attributed, without me having told you this, to any specific aspect of your marketing.

Who receives the newsletters? Is it just those of us that have signed up through the website or does it also capture the HiFi press people?

I used the term "public service" in a recent post to compliment the way you do business and explain how good hi-fi works. Benevolence aside you couldn't do it for long without earning money from your business.

By contrast I run the GSP UK loan scheme on a voluntary basis because I think you and your company make great British hi-fi. That is worth supporting and many of us buy the products after hearing how great they sound. It isn't 65,000 units but your marketing including the online community is what brings us here.

As encouragement I'd highlight the rapid growth of the forum membership and the brand/product loyalty you have built. The work on the website, SEO, the video and promoting "Graham Slee" is driving this growth. The UK loans have doubled in the last 6 months despite the economic situation.

Keep up the good work.

Jon

Maybe the online order form could include an optional field "Where did you hear about GSP", or something similar. This might give some clues to the effectiveness of various channels.

And perhaps another field: "Are you making your purchase after a home demo". As Jon reports increasing loans, are these being converted into purchases?

I know of new members (I would guess at least four) who have come here because I've suggested, on other forums, that it's a good place to be. I would also guess that 50% have loaned and purchased. I'm sure your experience, Bob, would be similar but greater due to a longer involvement.
This is all part of the GSP marketing mix, but it's not easily attributed to a single "piece" of the mix.

Well, whenever I see threads on other forums asking about phono stage or headphone amp choices I always suggest GSP and the loan scheme, which even if the OP doesn't respond others reading it might. I don't have any idea of the effectiveness of this, but the in-bound links to the GSP site will do no harm for its search engine rankings.
