I've just come across this unit.

From the detail on the web page, and scanning the PDF manual, it seems an interesting concept.

An ADC with a variable input gain (plug your turntable directly into it), and enough equalisation curves (from all flavours of disc, all periods) - applied via software - to cater for every taste. Sampling frequencies up to 384/32. Strewth! Imagine the file sizes.

Quite what it actually sounds like, of course, is a moot point, and I'm not likely to find out being wedded to my Reflex. . . .Wink

Haven't found out the cost yet. . . .

Well Bob, better give in now, eh? Somebody going to turn the lights out? Goodnight all...

Only joking but seeing it gets a free plug twice above I just thought I'd mention something about PGA's or programmable gain amplifiers but I also have to abide by the rules of this forum so I'd best not say exactly what I was going to say...

But I would say we used plenty on DC operated broadcast desks and I won't use them, period.

I guess I was wondering about the efficacy of software equalisation. My feeling is that analogue is the way to go for what after all is an analogue medium.

As an old maths mentor Dr Jones used to start off with: "from what we know..."

So what do we know?

(clue: http://www.phonostagepreamp.com/all-about-the-phono-preamp.htm tab3

"Infinite boost from a virtually zero frequency, say 1Hz to 100kHz, to ensure the entire audio band is reproduced perfectly flat, would require a dynamic range of 100dB just for that purpose.

That doesn't take into consideration some 60dB (at least) signal to noise, or the 14dB of headroom a recording requires — in total 174dB of dynamic range which is beyond what physics allows even to this day."

)

So what do we know already about the aforementioned product?

It must have some basic, probably RIAA equalisation, built into the analogue stage, about which "turns" the software EQ, or...  it does it all flat within a much restricted dynamic range.

Thank you Dr Jones for equipping me with x-ray eyes!

Every education facility should have a Dr Jones!
