I use Logitech Squeezeboxes for my digital audio. CDs are ripped as lossless FLAC files and stored on a server (just a computer really!) running the Logitech Media Server program. This controls all the players and sends out the FLAC files to be decoded by the players. I've 6 devices around the house in the system, from table Radio type players to hifi components. They can each play independently or be sync'd together (great for parties!). Sound quality is better than any CD player I've ever had, and you get Internet radio and streaming services like Spotify as well. The whole system's controlled by iPhone and iPad apps (which can also act as players) as well as IR remotes, the Squeezebox wireless controller, touch screens and buttons and knobs on the players. When I need a break from the technology I play an LP!

I also have a Pioneer PDS703 in good working order.
Trichord still do clock upgrades for this, so was wondering:

a) Is it worth fitting the Trichord clock upgrade to a CD player almost 20 years old
b) Would it make a good CD transport for a quality DAC. If so, this may be a better and cheaper option than a new CD player.
c) Should I do a + b above?

If the Pioneer still works ok why not get a decent DAC to partner it, and then demo transports at your leisure. You can get reclocking units if you feel you need one that you can use whichever transport you use. I ditched CD players a few years before I went to streaming audio, using a cheap Pioneer universal player for DVDs, CDs and SACD/DVD-A; a good DAC fed from this cleaned up CD playback very well.

So, ideally I would need a Squeezebox touch, feeding an Audiolab m-dac by a digital interconnect, connected to my UL? All this, I could control from my iPhone, iPad or Squeezebox touch?

Is WiFi really good enough to stream high quality audio?
Does Squeezbox server run on Windows Home Server?

Yup. You've got it exactly!

I run Squeezebox Server (now called Logitech Media Server) on a Windows Home Server box and have no issues with it. My Touch is wired, but I have players that are connected by wifi which work as just as well.

The only place where wifi is not a good idea is between your music library storage device and the server. But if your live library is on the Server, then that isn't a problem of course.

Logitech now have their own iPad app which is free. To my mind iPeng is a better app, but that isn't free - but still cheap. iPeng, with an in-app purchase also turns the device running it into another player. And the Touch also has an IR remote, as well as a touch-screen.

The scenario you describe will give you very good results. A lot will depend on your files of course. Lossless files types like FLAC are preferable to mp3s. Though to be honest, high bit rate mp3s can sound pretty good. You can stream WAV files, but there's nothing to be gained (IMO). They use up bandwidth - important over wifi - and can't be tagged. There are folk who say they can hear the difference between FLACs and WAVs - despite FLACs decompressing to give bit perfect copies of the WAV. All I can say is - try it yourself!

Yes, wi-fi is good enough. I have added a regulated PSU to the Squeezebox and further improved its performance.

Talking about Touch mods, there's a totally reversible Enhanced Digital Output app (that's a Squeezebox app, not an iTunes one!) which is dead easy to instal from the Touch itself which reconfigures the hardware to allow higher than 96Khz files to be output via coax. But - the killer is that it also enhances redbook standard playback.

There are other "hairshirt" mods that disable everything in sight, including the screen, for the ultimate in sound quality should you be tempted. Wink
