HD250 is really good; a bit of a dip in the midrange frequencies but you'll struggle to find a closed-back headphone that's better sounding, I think.
The earpad and clamping characteristics can have a big effect on the sound so you might need to tweak your pair carefully before you get the most out of them.

Totally agree. I've had a couple of pairs which sounded wrong initially, and with new pads the magic status quo was restored.
There was a rumour I found on t'interweb a few years back that only a relatively small number of drivers had true subwoofer-level bass and that these were particularly sought-after. I don't believe this is true, and based on my experiences think it's solely due to the condition of the pads and the fit on the head. If they're compressed (as all the old worn ones tend to be) the driver is closer to the pinnae than intended by the design. If they're leaky, then there's no bass. New non-genuine pads are dirt cheap from the usual sources, and work far better than old genuine worn ones. Then there are the official Senn ones, which are much more expensive. Can't say I notice much of a difference.

As long as the HD250 pleather pads provide a moderately good seal and are thick enough to provide a suitable driver-pinna distance, the sound should be great. If the pads are too shallow or not firm enough or open enough, the resulting sound can be a bit boomy on powerful bass tracks, with more closed-in stereo imaging. I put HD540II velvet pads on a HD250 Linear I and it sounded almost exactly the same as the HD540II (fantastic) so the pads do not necessarily need to completely seal for great sound to be achieved. Although if you're using the HD250 for monitoring recording, where you need them to isolate their sound inside the earcup, a good sealing pleather pad and a sensible choice of listening volume will get the job done.

Great advice, thanks both of you. I'll keep it in mind when I get them.

Yes, Graham was the original HD250II "fanboy"; I kinda jumped on the bandwagon a bit.
I eventually switched from HD250II to HD540II (closed-back version to open-back version) because I felt the HD540II performed better overall.
