With headphone impedances ranging from 16 Ohms to 600 Ohms (in the real world) and cable capactances ranging from 250pF to 1,000pF, it's very hard for any headphone amp to perform at its best, and with some combinations its phase-margin just gets too small.

The resulting instability causes brightness, or bass loss.

It is quite possible that the 40 Ohm ATH A900 was not a good match for the amps the reviewers used. I have never found the A900 bass shy. The A700 maybe, but not the A900.

As John and crew here will tell you, I spent a considerable amount of time testing the phase-margin on the SRG in all sorts of impedance combinations, using the SRG's new dual negative feedback network. Each manufacturer uses (hopefully) some form of stabilisation. However, it has been noted elsewhere that some amps favour one end of the impedance spectrum or the other, which basically means at one end they're stable, and the other end they are not.

having just read your posts again , i notice you are refering to the closed a900.
i already have these but want an open can aswell, i was talking about the ad900.(as an alternative to the hd650, that is)

Hi Miguel
why exactly do you not like the senns?
i am thinking of the ad900 as an alternative to the hd650. i am hoping to compare these at a local (ish) store soon. trouble is i am liking what i read about the ath-ad2000 now.
unfortunately i have no chance of trying these, as they are import only, in the uk!
its a big gamble but , if i prefer ad900 over hd650,when i try them,i will be thinking the ad2000 should be better with similar charateristics! does that make any senseConfused
cheers

Miguel, I wish I could let you hear my pair... a trip to FL would be great

To my ears, they are a lot more "honest" than HD650... definitely decent top and bottom end extension (which is why some people say the bass sounds 'funny'!!) and not veiled (!!) but they still have the Senn sound to me (which I like, mostly).

HD250 sounds nothing like your preferred K701/RS-1, nor DT770. To me they're more HD25 than 650...

Problem is re-sale might be difficult if it doesn't float your boat...

Let me know if you're ever in London town...

That none should be able to park up and enjoy the view without a smartphone and the knowledge in how to use apps

To me the HD580/600/650 sound boring and veiled. The upper frequencies are subdue thus why I do not care for it. To me the ATH-W1000, AH-D2000/5000 sound way better but that is me. Others will disagree ... Big%20smile

I would love to visit GB, straight to a pub and a few pints (stout) I say! Ooops! I forgot I would be traveling with "she who must be obeyed", which means shopping. Cry
