That's what I thought, I spoke to my neighbour about this (fully qualified) and he says competent just means knowledge. Most small jobs on an existing ring can be done by someone knowledgable but not necessarily part p qualified, so if you wanted to add/change a socket you could do as long as it's not in a special location like a kitchen or bathroom. I think the rule of thumb (or common sense) dictates that if you don't know then get someone in who doesWink

Sorry to dig up an older thread, but curious as to how the dedicated line with nothing other than the audio improves the signal. I have been considering this myself, but always been wondering whether it amounts to the same thing once this new circuit goes into the distribution board with all the other circuits in the house?

My music room does have a dedicated ring main and earthing which I previously used exclusively for the audio system. However it used to niggle me that music seemed almost too perfect, initially very impressive but clinical and somehow lifeless. I persisted with this for several months, convincing myself that this was 'Hi-Fi' sound.  As it was supposed to be an improvement, I really wanted to hear it (placebo effect?) but eventually gave up

Once I reverted to using the normal house circuit, it seemed more organic to my ears and I have stayed that way ever since. Perhaps it's just a fact of getting older and more cynical about snake oil in Hi-Fi. Maybe I am no longer as gullible as I once was. Maybe I am misguided and the 'dryer' sound is what people are supposed to prefer

Transmission via HV cables, substations, shared supplies with other properties, underground LV cables etc over far greater distances than in my house must be having a far greater impact so what real benefit comes from the final few metres? Likewise, fancy expensive power chords, miraculous extension leads etc etc? Some companies make a good living out of this

Please don't let me put you off, I am just relating my own experience
Older than I once was, younger than I'll be

For what it's worth when we had the house rewired last year A dedicated circuit was installed for hifi components. The main reason for doing so was to keep the hifi away from the influence of fridge/washing machine etc.
