Quote And we are talking about MM rather than MC?

The Denon I mentioned is a High Output Moving Coil (designed to work with a MM phono stage)

All the other cartridges mentioned in this thread are MM.

No idea whereabouts in this wide brown land you might be, but if shopping on ebay try to find one close enough to you to allow you to check it out and collect it yourself (or have a trusted friend do so).

Many sellers will have little idea of how to properly pack a turntable for transport and damage in transit is all too common.  Possible damage can range from annoying to fatal and even if insured the whole thing is best avoided if possible.  IMO

Good luck

Jon,
Thanks for all your advice. I think you are a little ahead as I currently don't own a single piece of vinyl or one of Graham's pre-amps! I am just trying to work out what I need and what to watch out for. I have got the headphones (SH250) as recommended by Graham, and come payday will be placing my order for the solo UL. I will then have to keep an eye out for a turntable, and once that is in the bag the Reflex phono amp - and maybe the odd bit of vinyl on the way! So it will be a few weeks before I am at that stage. As an interim I will have to use a NAD 515 CD to listen to what I have.

As I am in the antipodes, and not sure how available the technics turntable is, can anyone provide me some reasonable options it is worth looking for?

Thanks again for all the help

Hi Frostg
I can tell you that I'm very satisfied with my Pro-Ject debut III Esprit TT. I can't compare it to too many other TT's and I don't know how well it stands up against the 1200 as I've ever only heard that one plugged in to a compact stereo system with modest results. Anyhow, it has gotten pretty much top reviews overall as a very good starter turntable. Might be a good option if you don't want to go browsing for second hand TTs.
I went up from an old 80's dual CS 503-1 and that was a huge leap, especially after I upgraded the cartridge and stylus to an ortofon OM40 but even more so when I got the Reflex M. Now a nice and clean well pressed record sounds miles ahead of any CD I've ever heard. Big smile
Also I think I've heard it's currently one of the best selling turntables in the world so your local dealer might very well have one of them out for auditioning.

Best wishes
Johan

Johan, thanks for the alternative suggestion. It is good to have options, as I don't want to end up buying a pig in a poke, which is likely due to my lack of knowledge. Buying a 1200 off eBay unseen would not be good for me. And living in Canberra not sure how many I am likely to find going second hand. Maybe there are some MPs or senators with some lying around from their DJing days and I will be lucky! Though saying that we do have a member of cabinet who was the lead singer for midnight oil. :-)
Any other options if I don't find a good used 1200?

Dragging this back up...
I am also not sure about buying a Technics 1200 off e-bay, as one mans "excellent condition" can be anothers "fit for the bin."
So, I am looking at getting a TT for around £500, and two models spring to mind, the Rega RP3 and the Project RPM5.2 - anything else to audition?

After that, I need a phono stage, and it will be a little while before I am able to buy one from here, so until I save a few pennies, what is a a good budget MM phono amp?

It's a bit sad but the turntable industry is taking some terrific knocks right now - new customers to audio are turning their backs on vinyl in favour of the digital temptations of convenience and free music (most likely the free music because money is so incredibly tight world wide).

Therefore there seems to be 4 choices: Origin Live, Rega, Clearaudio and Pro-ject in your price range (possibly).

Now seeing I've just given a recommend to what are also my competitors in phono stages, you should at least buy a Gram Amp 2 SE from me - it's better than the above can offer!
That none should be able to park up and enjoy the view without a smartphone and the knowledge in how to use apps

I wanted a really cheap phono stage to start off with, almost disposable, whilst I save up some more pennies for a decent phono stage that will do my recently acquired Solo UL, HD650's and the soon to be shiny new turntable, justice.

Is the Gram Amp 2 SE good enough, or will I hear better things from a better phono stage?
Is there a big step up in performance with the Era Gold and the reflex M.

After hearing the UL headphone amp, I am fairly certain that your phono stages are also top notch.
It's just a question of sneaking another silver box in past Mrs H Wink
