"And at the same time it will convert USB to transformer-driven coax or optical S/PDIF and send to other devices — it's a hi-fi USB to optical converter and a hi-fi USB to coax converter." (The Bitzie has a headphone jack live all the time, too.)

 Complete signal path=
Phono Cartridge > Phono stage > Level Control for conversion > A-to-D converter with volume control to USB Out > Bitzie DAC, Optical Out > Optical input speakers

The Bitzie will convert USB to optical.

Many D-to-A converters have USB output to go to a computer.
The Devialet speakers have a computer inside.
Do they come with a way to control volume?
Do they require an external device to control volume?
Or can you control them wirelessly with an APP on your iPhone?

Do you have any suggestions from Devialet?

D-to-A converters I know of:
Stand alone and/or CPU controlled; Lexicon, Presonus
 Others;
Raspberry Pi
Steinberg

Sound Devices

Focusrite
Universal Audio
and many more

with this path, i would be using two devices to convert analog to digital.. wouldn't that be double the risk of quality loss?

everything is controlled on the devialet app. only has a power button on this speaker. lol

It might look the most posh, but it also runs autonomously.
No computer required.

I can think of nothing worse than having to piddle about with extraneous gear when I'm playing records Wink

So, you have very nice digital speakers designed primarily for wireless and optical TV input.

There are a lot of great suggestions here as to how you could integrate a turntable but to my mind you will not get what you are looking for which I assume is a sense of what all the fuss is about with vinyl.

Why not simply stream hires versions of the music that interests you and save a lot of money on turntables and convertors. I don't think that you will be able to tell the difference with vinyl in your setup and will ultimately be disappointed.

If you really want to get the vinyl experience then an analog system is the way to go.

I don't know if it helps but this is my own musical journey:

Like many others I ditched Vinyl for CDs in the 90's and for years my system consisted of a Marantz SACD player and NAD amplification. About 10 years ago I got the urge to check out vinyl so bought a turntable and used the phono input on the NAD. To be honest I couldn't really tell the difference between the turntable and SACD player playing versions of the same albums.

I then bought a Graham Slee ERA V instead of the NAD phono stage and that was an eyeopener.

When my NAD died I went completely old school and bought a Tube/Valve amplifier and from that point on my SACD player has been relegated to another room. Very recently I have upgraded my cartridge and replaced the ERA with an Accession and my enjoyment of records has just grown enormously.

I still listen to digital at my desk but if I really want to "listen" it is records every time.

I think it's really up to OP to assess what they want to do here. If they need a stopgap solution the converter that Chris posted or the chain that BAK suggested seems like it would work to get OP going. Maybe not ideal, but they could listen to records if that is what they really want to do for the time being.

I think for the longer term figuring out a more traditional stereo system is probably a good idea.

Note that I'm not against digital audio at all. I have thousands of CDs here and I've bought quite a lot of music digitally over the last few years from Bandcamp, HDTracks, etc. At least ~700 albums from Bandcamp alone. Matter of fact I'm listening to some FLAC music right now through my stereo.

My issue is more that we should use tools for what they were designed for and a pair of smart speakers with a single input was never designed for more than one source to begin with and certainly not playing records. You can make it work but it won't be ideal. Consider the converter method a stopgap solution.

this answers a question I had about volume control.
The Devialet website did not describe how you connect or control the active speakers.

I can think of nothing worse than having to piddle about with extraneous gear when I'm playing records Wink
and I agree with the fewer conversions the better.

I based my suggestion above on 2 things:
 1. no direct A-To-D with optical out available,
 2. giving a capability to digitize your vinyl as in record to a digital music file.

The Swissonic Converter mentioned by Chris is a good choice IMHO due to it is powered by 9vdc and not by 5vdc (or USB).
A unit powered by 9vdc can be more reliable and have better headroom.
