Hello! i've been lurking in the forum and finally decided to register and post my first topic.

I recently bought a pair of Devialet Silver phantoms and am keen on adding a turntable and a reflex M to try out vinyl sound.

My speakers are set up to receive the optical out from my tv so its also my home theatre system.

the output from the phono stage is analog.. so i'll need a

1. analog to digital converter..
2. and a splitter of sorts to receive 2 optical inputs from preamp and tv.. to go into my speaker.

what would you guys recommend for both? i'm concerned about quality loss..

for my turntable, i'm thinking about a P******t x1 or x2 and perhaps a sumiko moonstone?

Speakers like that (wireless, self powered, one input) complicate things. They were not designed with a traditional analog stereo system in mind or for use with a turntable. I had to actually look for the back panel of the speaker through a search because the manufacturer didn't bother to show that on their website. Please don't take this the wrong way but I can't say I'm a fan of this type of product.

Now, trying to integrate vinyl with these speakers is going to pose a challenge. You need to find an A/D converter that has RCA *inputs* with an optical *output*. Most of the professional A/D converters I have seen don't work like that. Typically the inputs are 1/4'' jack or XLR and the outputs will be XLR, USB, and/or Lightning port usually. Perhaps I'm wrong and something exists for you, but it would not be very common at all.

Cheaper, consumer level A/D converter products typically have RCA inputs but a coax digital output jack. If you can find a switch box that lets you convert the coax output to optical input for the speakers, then you probably could get things to work as you describe. Your system would look like this:

TT>preamp out>A/D converter>coax out to optical switchbox>optical out to powered speaker.

You would also plug the TV into the switchbox via optical.

I don't have an specific recommendations for products sorry. A lot of the cheaper A/D converters seem to come from the same factories with different brand names slapped on them. Same deal with switchboxes. You might have to try a few to see which one works best for you.

Personally, if the goal was for me to play vinyl I would put together a separate, analog-centric stereo system to use for that. I realize if you just spent $$$ on these wirelesss speakers you might not want to do that.

RE: your proposed turntable, I can't say I'm a fan of P******t products in general and especially not their entry level TTs. That said, these are new models, so not a lot of long term reviews out and I haven't seen or handled them. Perhaps they've improved over the old entry level Project stuff. I do not know. RE: the newer Sumiko cartridges, a German magazine called Lowbeats did extensive testing on the entire range. That might be worth reading (easy to translate via Google translate) if you are interested in those cartridges.

Good luck.

I kind of agree with the comments. You would be better off with an all analog system for vinyl otherwise there are too many compromises and you end up with a bunch of signal conversions that can potentially degrade the sound.

That's where I ended up. My A/V system is digital/analog, Computer digital, Vinyl analog.

thanks all for your comments..much appreciated.

i did find several Analog to Digital products. and you're right, its just a box with different brand names slapped on them ranging from 30-50 dollars.

i also found that Sonos has a product called the Connect, that does a bit more fancy stuff like streaming and also offers analog in, and optical/coax outputs. that is in the range of 350 dollars.

So my first thought was should i just go for the Sonos (for the branding) or would it not be any different from the run of the mill made in china boxes. and i still end up losing quality.

RE turntables, i am attracted to project TTs philosophy similarly to GS products in that they try to produce quality items for the purpose without going for mass production and raising prices from branding.

QN: would graham ever consider adding a digital output or would that be somewhat sacrileges?

technically, it wouldn't be too hard to do? and could attract a whole generation of users like me who do have a digital system and won't have separate setups for everything.
