This waterfall graph below may help to explain things. It shows the slightly uneven response (it won't be flat with speakers in a room) and the rates of decay of the various frequencies. Despite the careful positioning of things in the room and bass trapping, you can see peaks that relate to the room dimensions e.g. 70Hz for my ceiling height and about 40Hz for my room's width and length, which is hard to absorb.

I used REW to measure and plot this. The mic isn't laboratory calibrated so don't worry about the stuff under 20Hz.
