Agreed. Speakers this small rely on proximity for bass extension but for really deep bass with speed and dynamic impact, I will use the CHR-120. I have two pairs of these in matching silver and could buy more pairs if needed. Moving mass of 12g per cone, an F0 of 34Hz and the same cone profile therefore dispersion pattern of the Tozzi Two driver.

So impressed with the Tozzi Two that I bought a second pair, whilst they are still available to buy. Each pair was about £410 after Customs charges, which for the performance and build quality provides excellent value. After comparing Tozzi Two and MySphere 3.1 for quite a while, I hope to sell the headphone and my surplus Mark Audio drivers (11MS, CHR-90, 10P and 7P/12PW). My next comparisons will be Tozzi Two vs CHP-90 vs CHR-120. My selections favour a native flat frequency response or close to it. The CHR-120 is the most mechanically capable speaker of the three but has the least flat response.

Once I am satisfied that I've got the most resolving speakers I can create, I will be go back to tinkering with source/transport. Can't judge an entire system's imaging through headphones as differences become more subtle and take longer to identify. Speakers provide more spatial information.

Been trying a pair of Markaudio CHP-90 this evening. Bloody hell! These are going to be incredible...

P.S Brief Tozzi Two review

The Tozzi Two are a fantastic pair of speakers with a neutral transparent sound that is musical, engaging and tonally accurate. These were selected for their flat frequency response and low mass single-driver-single-suspension concept and do not disappoint. The shallow cone profile and symmetrical waveguide allow natural imaging and a wide sound dispersion. The aluminium-ABS enclosure is high quality, very rigid and has reassuring weight to it. Gold-plated banana plug contacts at the back is great, along with a bass port to slightly increase bass extension. Bass extension is respectable but limited. However, these could be blended with a pair of bass woofers such as the CHR-120 (which have a similar cone profile) with simple crossovers to produce an incredible full-bandwidth system.

My pair cost £410 altogether; I was so impressed that I bought a second pair. Applicable for both musical enjoyment and critical listening; I use Graham Slee Proprius monoblocks for speaker amplification and the result is professional studio-standard sound for nearfield desktop listening, in my opinion. Thank you Mark Fenlon for producing this product at an affordable price point.

Just bought a pack of twenty 18" x 12" x 12" double-walled plain brown cardboard boxes; some for temporary storage but also for experimenting with my CHP-90, CHR-90 and CHR-120 drivers. Cost was about £1.65 per box so I will able to get creative with prototyping enclosures and would like to explore shallow plates or bowls made of aluminium or ceramic for possible front waveguides. I'm going to have to develop some DIY skills and buy some tools to shape metal and ceramic.

Have received the order of twenty plain double-walled cardboard boxes. 457mm x 305mm x 305mm so about 42 litre air capacity. Depending on how I fold the sides (top and bottom), I can create a totally sealed box or I can create air gaps/holes/slots/vents, either front or rear facing, to alter the pressure loading behind the driver/s. I could even cut away some/all of the rear face.

I may try mounting the driver inside the box so that only its diaphragm is visible through a hole cut in the cardboard. I could try attaching sheet metal to the box exterior to add strength and improve appearance. I'm curious how low the CHR-120 woofer can go inside a box of these dimensions. What I like acoustically about cardboard compared to timber is the low mass and the damping; it doesn't store a lot of vibrational energy and then re-emit it in all directions like wood. You don't need to use acoustic foam inside or underneath the enclosure as it is already self-damping. If I want to reduce the internal volume, I can tape cardboard sheets inside to partition the chambers.

With Slee electronics and MA drivers like the CHP-90, CHR-90 or CHR-120, these speakers in cardboard boxes will sound just as good as any professional speaker. The CHP-90 should certainly be suitable as monitor speakers as the frequency response is exceptionally flat and the bass extension should be extraordinary for the size. Or the Tozzi Two speakers alongside a low-pass pair of CHR-120 could be my full-range solution; this would be my replacement for MySphere 3.1 as it would be full bandwidth, low moving mass and simple to achieve a flat response.

They will be 'lossy boxes' which may help. 42 litres is quite a big enclosure, what is the Vas of your CHR-120's please Ash?
