I subscribe to the rubbish in rubbish out theory. You are likely to be pleasantly surprised by what you end up with.    You would most likely find an issue with poor front end and high end amp cables and speakers though there are exceptions as always but will be difficult to get somethings of a tunnel which has not put in properly at the other end.

I think of it as a percentages game Paul, where each link in the chain can only equal or degrade, not add to the quality of the sound. A budget amp will reproduce music at its own level but a higher quality input should always sound better. ie:

Cartridge 100% =>Phono 70% => 'budget' amp 70% = 49% of what you started with
Cartridge 100% =>Phono 100% => 'budget' amp 70% = 70% of what you started with

As long as it doesn't go:

Cartridge 100% =>Phono 70% => 'budget' amp 70% = 70% of what you started with
Cartridge 100% =>Phono 100% => 'budget' amp 70% = 70% of what you started with

He's allowed a life :) and, being a noob round here, it's not really okay to start moaning, so I'm happy to wait on him. But, of course, I'm itching to give some shiny new kit a spin.
