Accidentally opened the PSU1 and noticed there are two fuses. One near the socket is a 3A fuse, and in the middle of the transformer part there is another one marked 63mA. I wonder why these two fuses differ so much in value and please advise whether I can replace the 63mA fuse with a 2A fuse?

There is only a fuse in the British style plug. It's purpose is to protect the cable and nothing else, and as the cable is rated at 2.5 Amps, the nearest prefered value of 3 Amps is used as approved by BS1363 (B.S.: British Standard).
The fuse inside the PSU1 serves a different purpose as set out in IEC/CSA/UL 60950: to protect the user from fire, overheating and subsequent electric shock. The size of the fuse is determined as one that fails prior to such a danger whilst allowing it to operate properly otherwise. In this case, by the prescribed test methods as set out in this international standard, the fuse value for the nominal mains voltage of 230V AC was determined as being 63mA anti-surge. The whole power supply was then tested by Kema Quality (an IEC/CSA/UL certified body) and deemed to be safe. It was then awarded the CB (certified body) safety certificate number NL-8023. If you replace the fuse with a 2A fuse you expose yourself to great danger, and if it were ever passed on to somebody else, great danger to them also. I would be very grateful if you were to stick to the existing rating as it serves an important purpose. |
