I've a few 12" 45s. Back in the day EMI had a small range of classical discs with popular works (Finlandia, Ride of the Valkyries etc). These were nicely dynamic. Nimbus also had a range of "Super Analogue Masters" - 45rpm discs with (almost) 33rpm playing time. These were great.
Then there are 12" mixes of pop tracks - Sade, some Alan Parsons etc. Plus the "audiophile" ones from Classic Records. A release of Kind Of Blue had side 2 repeated at the correct speed on the second disc, with a 45rpm alternate take of Flamenco Sketches on side 4. My most extravagant purchase however was Dusty Springfield's The Look of Love - repeated on both sides, one at 33 one at 45. Most of the vinyl is taken up with the runout groove - no IGD here! Oh - I forgot Classic's single sided 45 of Ravel's Alborada del Gracioso (Fritz Reiner's "Living Stereo" Chicago version). The blank side is good for checking anti-skate settings . . ![]() Not a 45, but I was playing my rip of a direct-to-disc Umbrella record (Mozart Eine Kleine Nachtmusik etc) the other day. Nicely immediate sound, but performances were pretty "safe" - as no doubt the pressure of a take without any mistakes got to the musicians!

....though thickness is perhaps a separate issue to speed...

Hi All,
It's certainly the case that the 45rpm 12" records I have sound better than the 33rpm versions of the same. More tactile, more detail in the bass and more open sounding. However, I don't know how much us due to the speed and how much us the new mastering. Either way I'm not that fussed, I'm just happy they sound better. I suppose I could ask Mr Google, but there are more interesting things to read online. Mick. |

Agree 100% Mick the end result is my aim too! Probably both - my suspicion has always been the studios allow wider dynamic range on 45 masters maybe the speed allows the stylus to follow wider physical movement to reproduce the effects we are hearing?

Back in the days when I was in a band that was exactly the reasoning for putting 12" versions of singles, better dynamics. I imagine the same thought process applies to albums at 45rpm - the assumption being also that the higher speed works in much the same way as it does on tape? But as with everything vinyl the end results can be somehat mixed. I'm curious if a similar reasoning is behind half speed mastering - or is that an entirely different thing?
