I use Discogs quite a bit. Pick a seller with decent feedback, and you're sorted. I've bought loads from Discogs, and no problems with anything I've bought.

It is not near to Plymouth but I have been to a good record shop in Exeter a couple of times in the past, on the high street down the hill behind the Cathedral close.

There is (was in 2014/15) a good second hand and new record shop next to the bus station in Truro. I can't remember seeing one in the various other towns we have visited like Falmouth, Bodmin, St Ives, Launceston, St Austell, etc. but others may know better. There were plenty of charity shops with vinyl around and I think I shopped in some in Plymouth where you are!

Not a shop per se but I can recommend Brett Grant @ http://www.classicrecords.co.uk/" rel="nofollow - http://www.classicrecords.co.uk/ if you are looking for specific classical recordings. I have purchased from him for a good number of years now and never had a disappointment.

| The good second hand / new record shop is still going in Truro - it's within the Pannier Market close to the Lemon Quay piazza and bus station.
There's a good second hand record shop in Falmouth close to Trago Mills. I think there may be another one somewhere in Falmouth.
Don't know about St. Ives (pronounced locally as "S'nives"), Bodmin, etc.

Failing the shops scenario, I also highly tout Discogs. Very well self "regulated" by users and sellers. I stick to mint or near mint and try to order from same seller as a batch to save postage costs. You would not believe the amount of rare records i have obtained at chip shop prices!

Last time I walked down Cornwall Street from Drakes Circus there was a s/h record shop down towards the end. I seem to remember it also sold other stuff, comics or similar. As you can tell I have never bought from it. However shops are always changing down there, could be yet another vape outlet by now! Worth the walk though as the Oriental supermarket towards the bottom has the best spices etc in the area!

I'm relatively lucky in that there is a growing trend in new record stores opening in the Midlands. However, have you ever tried any of the 2nd hand charity stores? The likes of Oxfam, Red Cross, Sue Rider etc. etc. almost always have a selection of vinyl tucked away somewhere. I very rarely ever entered one of these stores, but now it's a must just to check on the new vinyl stock that they have been given. I have had some great bargains recently for a couple of pound each and they will always do you a deal if you buy several in one go. Recently obtained a copy of one of my favourite albums for £2.50 almost brand new, complete with the CD and MP3 download code included, the local record store wanted to order it at £32. Give them a try, you have nothing to lose!

Sounds like a bargain and best of all you can use the saving on that favourite LP to buy more LP's to enjoy. When I visit another town or city and have free time I enjoy going through the records in its charity shops. You are right there are some bargains to be had and also some cheap but rewarding LP's you'd try for a quid or two but not buy at full price.

Now that is strange, I have been looking at record cleaners only just today. My local 2nd hand record shop uses a Okki Nokki for cleaning his stock, he rates it very highly but at £440 it's a bit steep for me and the 250 or so LP's that I have. He also recommends the Project VCS at £350 but did say that other dealers have had problems with them due to the high usage that they give them, should be okay for home use though. The other option he suggested was the Spin Clean at just £69, this is hand rotated and does not dry the records, but may be a cost effective option. Maybe someone on the forum with a Okki Nokki can provide a record cleaning service for a small fee?

Are you in Plymouth, MA in the States? If so there is a great record store in Boston called In Your Ear! Huge selection of 2nd hand records. Also for new, I've had great success buying online from Elusivedisc, Mucic direct, as well as AudiophileUSA. Also bought numerous records from an ebay seller called Importcds. Another comes to mind, that would be Acousticsounds for their great audiophile pressings etc......

For new releases I buy direct from Piccadilly Records online. I've bought from there for over 5 years now and my experience has been perfect every time. The records are always well packaged and they use a decent courier too. If you spend over a certain amount then postage is free. They also are a physical shop in Manchester and I've popped in there when I've happened to visit the NW too - it's great.
For older and more rare records then Discogs is the place to be as many others have said. Again I've regularly bought from there for many years with only the one issue I can recall (which was resolved satisfactorily). Some rarer stuff I've bought from sellers in Europe and on occasion from the states, again with no issues. Hope that helps

I actually find a lot of decent records at yard sales (here in the states). You can usually pick up some decent gems for .25 cents or so. I also have had great experiences with Discogs. Although, I usually only buy mint or near mint, depending on what I’m buying.

I also have had good luck with Discogs. I tend to use this if there is something very specific I am looking for that I am unlikely to find at a brick and mortar. I do really enjoy the "thrill of the hunt" that comes with going record shopping at used record shops, thrift stores, and garage sales and finding something amazing by pure chance. I have stumbled on some great music that I didn't know I would enjoy until I picked it up on a whim and brought it home.

Agree about Discogs. The sellers there seem to be a lot better than on ebay although I have been able to pick up a few there as well.
I live in a small university town called Ann Arbor in Michigan and we are fortunate to have 3 record shops that always seem to be quite busy - especially on Record Store Day.

Not sure about the UK. There are a couple of good ones in the USA - acousticsounds.com and elusivedisc.com
Of course there is always ebay although you have to be careful who you buy from. Even Amazon for new stuff. I have used them all.

I would ask around and see if there are local shops in your area that are known to grade accurately. In my area there is only one shop out of half a dozen or more I will trust to grade properly and offer no-hassle exchanges. They are closed due to Covid-19 but are doing curbside pick up and mailorder. Perhaps there is a shop in your area that does the same thing?
Now, after going through the Discogs overgrading lottery with used vinyl I never buy from random sellers on there anymore. There are two shops I trust, which have their own website and I am a repeat buyer because they are honest graders. My last delivery from one of those stores had a problem and they quickly corrected it and credited my account.
Basically what I'm saying is that it may take some trusted recommendations and some trial and error to find specific stores or Discogs/eBay sellers that grade accurately, pack well, etc. for used vinyl.

I've always found buying vinyl records to be a crapshoot no matter where you buy them, CD's are easier but not as much fun.
Amazon has a pretty extensive selection and they are good at taking back albums that are flawed. Before I buy any album I check out the price of a new one on Amazon. Tonight I bought a couple of albums off Discogs, I've heard nothing but good things about them and their prices are pretty reasonable. Ebay is a toss-up.

Vinyl wise, I find the odd bargain on eBay but discogs is a more reliable source albeit at slightly higher prices.
In general I don't by new vinyl, largely because the sampling rates of most recordings are still based on CD sampling rates.
Newer music I buy on CD because it's cheaper and my vinyl system cant resolve detail that isn't there. A half speed master of CD quality recording is still limited by the source however carefully it is pressed.
For a bit of fun I suggest you find an analogue recording on vinyl you like, buy the CD and compare the two. For example, I have the Kubelik Mahler symphony set on both vinyl and CD. With an Accession handling the phono stages duties the differe is almost comical. The CD lacks both the dynamics and the details of the vinyl version.
When vinyl pressings get produced from high sampling rate files through quality DACs I'll start buying new vinyl again, but until then my vinyl purchases will stay limited to analogue recordings.

Hi James you are correct about new vinyl if it's recorded from the CD master it's all about the sample rate. I have also read if you wont the best sound ( Analogue ) you have to go for stuff recorded pre CD as most recording studios started going digital ( remember on CDs the AAD,ADD,DDD) how it was recorded. the same go's for reissues on vinyl it has to be from the analogue master tape (so I'm told). but I have a album by a band that recorded it in all analogue ( It's a new album) and they did not put it out on CD. they did put it out as a digital down load some time after, well they have to make a living.. By the way remember most thought AAA was the best. Still I do like playing Vinyl more than CDs It's just thing,( it is not about the sound quality) I have good recordings on CD and vinyl Jonathan

Here in the Brighton (UK) area, we're well served for both new and secondhand shops - though some great ones have now gone due to retirement/redevelopment, and others may not survive the Covid crisis . However, s/h vinyl prices have risen a lot in recent years as part and parcel of the "resurgence" - and you're now far less likely to pick up a crate-digging bargain in the charity shops (all closed at the moment anyway).
Online, I've only ever had one naff experience on Discogs - and I've bought plenty on there over the last few years. Some sellers on there are so good that I'd travel a long way to their physical shops if they had them....

Indeed it pays to get in early. It's amazing too how some of the old records sound so much better than the re-releases if they are mint. Of course some look good when bought and play poorly but the searching is part of the fun. Got a really clean copy of City to City by Gerry Rafferty at a fair a few months ago and it sounds amazing. Was after that one awhile.
