Hi all,as above,I want to use a computer in the " music" room.
What's likely to cause the least interference?

Hello Dave,

I'm not sure I understand the question fully...  Are you looking to use a computer in the same room as the music system and are concerned about interference from the network connection affecting the hifi?  Does the music system contain any networked devices, streamers etc?  Does 'mains' refer to a Power Line Communication (PLC) device or a cabled (Ethernet) connection?  If it's the former then I would definitely recommend that you use WiFi, PLC devices radiate horribly and the injected signal will be passed to all devices plugged into the power.  The best solution would probably be shielded UTP cable.

Hello Dave,

PLC devices are the devil's work... I also dabble with amateur radio and as soon as one of these things gets turned on everything below 10MHz disappears into a wall of noise.  It's unlikely that WiFi will create any audible issues with your system but for the absolute lowest chance of interference then shielded UTP is the way to go.  If you end up connecting audio equipment to your network, you may wish to experiment with unshielded cable for the digital audio connections (http://www.crazy-audio.com/2013/10/tracking-down-noise-sources-on-a-raspberry-pi/)

With ethernet cable UTP (unshielded twisted pair) is best.
Cat5e is up to the job, Cat6 has better RF rejection capabilities.

When you install screened cabling the installation needs to be properly earthed, and everything earthwise needs to be connected to the same ground point, otherwise you'll find the screen has the potential to be a good radio aerial.
It can be a world of grief, and it's best not to even go there.

If you run cable externally use proper external cable, and dont use a staple gun to fix cable to woodwork - it's clips or trunking.

WiFi is your second best option.
Ethernet over mains devices are the work of Satan himself.
