I'm on my fourth CD player since 1986. Each has sounded better than the last. But the latest is so blasted slow. It takes a seeming eternity before the loading drawer opens, then another eon to read the CD before being ready to play. From what I read on the web this is not uncommon. Why?

Because nobody makes a dedicated audio CD mechanism any more.
There's no money in it.

hmmm is it using a DVD drive mechanism? For smoothness and build quality those old Philips pro mechanisms and their custom variants take a lot of beating. My own CD player (10yrs old now) has a lousy, clunky mechanism compared to my early 90's beer money Technics or even a super smooth & fast Sony one I had in a little mini system. But it clearly has a better DAC than either of those. I get the impression that as the market for CD only players dwindled, then mechanisms were mostly really cheapo mass market things designed for dvd players/pc's etc.

EDIT: yeah in fact what Chris said ^^

Maybe. But, right before the current one, I ordered and returned a Cambridge Audio Azur 851C. (Sounded fine but no better than the one being replaced.) The Cambridge was not slow at all. Maybe that model use an old stock transport.
