DON'T LAUGH...

I was hoping to put this myth/fact to rest. I have often heard that you should wait (insert time period here) between playing sides of an album. Supposedly, the pressure applied by the stylus on the grooves produces enough heat to warp the groove, so the record needs time to recover.

I, for one, like to listen to what I want, when I want and have never adhered to this line of thought.

Can anyone put this to rest?

I heard that the word gullible has been removed from the Oxford English dictionary.

Now now gentlemen... Wink

IMO that's another load of BS. The opposite is true in my findings, that if the cartridge is worked it will do a better job. Now what was the scientific explanation at college? Work (as in effort) causes heat, or something along those lines. OK, we were dealing with giant machines compared to a phono cartridge, but 'work' will still result in 'heat' even though you may be hard pressed to measure it.

And the (miniscule) heat does? It should improve the flexibility of the stylus suspension. All I can say is that I find an improvement if I play a warm-up side before settling down to play a few hours of vinyl.

agree the second side onwards often sounds better but unsure whether phono stage (?) or not but never thought about cartridge.

Thanks Graham. I don't know about the science/physics, but I always thought the wait period was bunk.
