I'm shortly hoping to get another TT to partner my two Technics linear trackers. Assuming it arrives in one piece, and works ok, it's a Sony PS-X600 Biotracer.

I'm a sucker for gadgets, and an actively balanced tonearm, for all it's motorised complexity, appeals. EmbarrassedConfused

To start with I've a load of p-mount cartridges that I can use in a half-inch adaptor, but with the ceiling lifted on quality I could start to look at better cartridges - but what? My two restrictions are cost (no more that £500) and the fact that I want to stick with MM or HOMC.

I had a Goldring 1042 on a GyroSE for a number of years, which was good, but I'd like something different from that. Presentation-wise it should be full-bodied with a clear top-end, but not so sharp it strips wallpaper.

The Benz Micro ACE H seems to get good reports, and the Clearaudios look interesting, but I'm very open to suggestions . . . . .

I have a Micro Benz Glider whichthe ACE is supposed to be tonally similar to - I am very happy with it.

Previously I have had MM - from the Ortofon 2M Blue and Red.  These much dryer that the Micro benz, but had good detail and punch.

...... and that's my opinion, take or leave it

I myself have very favourable results with a Nagaoka MP110 (GBP70?) Thumbs Up
Its fullbodied and clear sounding (you get more detail with the more expensive ones; GBP150-300)

It has the MI=Moving Iron principle (specifically MP=MovingPermalloy)
Handles like MM and it also tracks like mad and is without IGD (afaich ;-))
And that's only with the Rega protractor; so probably still better with a Baerwald Question

Thanks Andrew and Han . . .

I'd overlooked the Nagaoka's . . . MI, so like the Grado Prestige then? I've a Grado Red1 as a p-mount - loses a bit on top but great body to it . . .

The Ortofon 2Ms look promising too.

I have an old Technics SL-7 linear tracking TT that needs a new P-Mount. Which of your P-mounts would you recommend as being the best value for a vintage table like mine? I would get it up and running for a second "fun" table, so not looking for state of the art.

As for your new cart., I will be watching this thread to see what people suggest to you. What was it about the Goldring that you didn't like? I was actually considering a Goldring...... Perhaps the Audio Note version.

Grado was another thought for full bodied sound.

Ah!p-mounts! I've been searching for the Holy Grail here . . . If Graham will excuse the shameless plug, have a look at my little hobby website where, if you register (for free, gratis even!) you can hear around a dozen different p-mounts, mostly mine, but a few loaned, http://p-mount.net Big smile

A safe recommendation would be the AT cartridges that LPGear sell under their Reference Series name - varying stylii at different prices. I bought their top Shibata-shod VS and this sounds pretty good. I also have a "cooking" AT92E which for its price is very good and maybe a good choice for you to start with. The guy I bought my SL7 from threw in a new AT92E to get me going. The big advantage of these and the LPGear range is that you can easily get replacement stylii.

There's also a lowly Shure M92E; you can improve on this by fitting a N110HE stylus . . .

Going up the scale a bit, Grado Black (or Red), Digitrac 300SE (an Ortofon OM30 by another name), or Ortofon X1-MCP HOMC are all good.

When you look at NOS cartridges, anything goes really. I've got an ADC SER III coming from the States at the moment, and a real favourite of mine (but hard to find) is an Empire 1080LT. Technics P22/23/24 bodies can have a Jico SAS stylus for ultimate SQ.

Hopefully that, and my website, will help you choose something suitable.

As far as the Goldring 1042 goes, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it at all. I loved it! But having had one I feel I'd like to try something different on the Sony. That's all . .

Thanks for the information and the link. Very nice! I will study all of that over the next week or so.

Thanks for letting me know about your Goldring too. Now, back to recommending a new cartridge for you . . . .
