Way back when we were compiling the wish list for what was then the Big DAC, a few of us were hankering after it also being a music server/renderer. It wasn't to be, which was the right decision, but it means there's still one piece of the Hi Fi jigsaw missing. There aren't many DACless streamers out there that might complement the Majestic DAC. Sure, there are loads of streamers that could be used, but all with what would be redundant DACs built in. The only two DACless streamers/servers/renderers that I know of are the Cyrus Stream X2 and the Moon Mind 180 Streamer. Both are pretty pricey and I've no idea whether the technology justifies the price.

Today, I happened upon a thread in another place, discussing the building of an "audiophile" music server based on the Raspberry Pi using an add on HiFiBerry unit (analogue and digital versions available) and Volumio software.

http://www.hifiberry.com/
http://volumio.org/

Total cost comes in at under £200. But, would it do justice to the Majestic DAC?

One thing I can't work out, that I would want from it, is whether it would be able to fetch the music files over an Ethernet/Homeplug network from an external HDD connected to an iMac.

Does anyone have any experience of this or fancy giving it a go and feeding back? Maybe it's right up Leo's street. Maybe it could spawn a GSP streamer. Maybe I'm dreaming.

This looks very interesting Ifor. You're right about built in DACS being surplus to requirements!

The Solidrun CuBox looks a good little device to run Volumio on too.

I could imagine a Reflex-like enclosure containing the necessary gubbins Wink. No reason why the "transport" functions wouldn't work fine with the MajDAC IMO. Purveyors of expensive kit would probably disagree . . . LOL

If you mount the external drive on your Mac and set up a share for it, it should be seen over the network - not that this is something I've done as I use NAS boxes rather than USB drives (is this what you mean?).

I couldn't work out if the "player" functions were those of a DLNA "renderer", pulling files from a server, being controlled from a control point on a phone (or whatever). Hopefully it's a lot simpler!

Yes, I think that's the same dream as mine!

I would love to know how good it is and I would be tempted to give it a go if someone here had already done so, but ideally I'd like someone to do it for me.

Having bought a Pi for both John C and Leo quite a long time ago for that very reason but with no results, I doubt there will be anything forthcoming on the Pi front.

Having said the above I don't want anybody to think I am belittling either of them - I am not. I'm sure if they were not up to their ears in production they could R&D some sort of a solution, but 'our commune' has to make a living - simple facts of life.

And because of that this old man found himself doing the vast majority of the company's digital R&D.

Utopia may come one day.

To go from Ethernet to a DAC's decoder (the bit between the input and the DAC proper) requires the Ethernet data to be processed into the right type of signal (basically S/PDIF). This requires a computer - the Pi being one type, which can output USB, which then has to be turned into S/PDIF.

My, how the expectations have grown.
That none should be able to buy or sell without a smartphone and the knowledge in how to use apps

That's a shame.
If anyone here gives it a go please keep us informed.
