If all of us were to "stop listening to the HiFi and start listening to the music" , how many would be on the Forum? Surely we are here because we were unhappy with some aspect of our hifi and ended up listening to GS. Once here I can't see any benefit moving on to other more prosaic equipment and just want to enjoy listening to the music.

Mike
I see your point.
But there is a point where it can take over. Most of us on this forum are music lovers, but a audiophile to me is not listening to the music there listening for improvements I think that's the difference. This is just my opinion. I know I can improve on my system but I also like to listen to my music and that is what I got my HiFi for.
Reflex M, Solo (both with PSU-1) CuSat50, Lautus, Spatia & Spatia links cables. Ortofon Bronze.

I take your point, Mike, the upgrade trail was always part of the hobby but, as one gets older that search for the Holy Grail becomes more futile. Indeed, I suspect that using the word 'hobby' in relation to hifi gives away the age group to which I belong (see the start of this thread). I am interested in what Graham and others in the industry do and say, and the experiences of other users  -  hence belonging to the forum  -  and I might make further improvements to my system, but I am generally better now at accepting what I've got and enjoying it for what it is (ie enjoying listening to the music).

There almost seems to be a bizarre need to apologise for our passion for well recorded music
played back on equipment designed and made to make the best of it.
Mike rightly states it above.
Graham has an ascendency of improving phono stages culminating in the Accessions.

A mate might curl a lip or glaze over when you casually mention your passion & then gleefully
rattle on about cars or whatever.

Well written Rich. I've spent most of life buying and building musical equipment and hifi. Some of my friends enjoy the sounds and some are interested, curious about the tech relating it to what they know. But most people don't give a damn, which is fine by me. I love my stereo and my multichannel sound.

People with an interest, hobby or passion other than cars, football, TV are often sneeringly labelled 'Anoraks'.
Fishing enthusiasts might escape criticism and ironically they wear the best anoraks.Approve

I wonder about many things, like what was it like before WWII broke out, before WWI broke out, before the destruction of Pompeii, before the flood.

Like, how did they pick up the pieces, and how will we do it next time?

I mean, how could I explain why we had integrated amplifiers. I could say that they were for old people, but died out with old people. You can scoff, but if you do you're blind to what's going on.

What are the music sources?

Let's skip vinyl, and ask the question again.

Tape? Gone.

What else?

CD player? Few made these days.

CDs are usually ripped quite successfully on a laptop or PC, so...

S/PDIF? USB? Good luck!

The three chips which ever made any audio sense - made music sound fluid and relaxed - if you knew how to implement them - well, they're gone.

So what's left? Vinyl.

And after fossil fuels?

Ice Cream?

That none should be able to buy or sell without a smartphone and the knowledge in how to use apps
